Overview

The Huron KX 50 M is a fixed-portal five-axis machining centre with a forked milling head and a 75 kW, 20,000 rpm spindle. Travels are 2,000 x 1,700 x 900 mm (78.7 x 66.9 x 35.4 in) over a fixed table of 2,200 x 1,250 mm. It is the shorter of the two KX 50 machines in what Huron calls the KX Large Series.

The spindle figures tell you what the machine is for. Seventy-five kilowatts with only 75 Nm of torque and a characteristic speed of 9,550 rpm describes a spindle that makes its power at high speed. That is the profile of an aluminium structural-parts machine, cutting at high feed with small to medium tools, and Huron names the aeronautical sector among the uses of the series.

B and C axes sit in the head. B swivels +/- 110° and C rotates +/- 360°, both at 100 rpm, with 4,000 Nm quoted for motor and clamping torque. Fast head axes plus 40 m/min linear rapids suit simultaneous contouring. Huron lists direct measurement on the linear and rotary axes, and states 0.007 mm positioning on X, Y and Z and 10 sec on B and C.

The table takes 4,000 kg (8,818 lb). The magazine has 30 housings for tools up to 90 mm in diameter and 8 kg. Allow 6,630 x 8,700 mm of floor and 5,140 mm of height.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 75 kW spindle at up to 20,000 rpm on an HSK 63-A taper
  • Forked head with B at +/- 110° and C at +/- 360°, both at 100 rpm
  • Direct measurement on linear and rotary axes, per Huron's feature list
  • 40 m/min rapids on X, Y and Z
  • Y travel of 1,700 mm exceeds the 1,250 mm table width

Limitations

  • Spindle torque is 75 Nm, which rules out heavy cuts in steel or titanium
  • Table load of 4,000 kg (8,818 lb) is the lowest in the KX Large Series
  • 30 tool housings, against 40 on the KX 100
  • Installation height of 5,140 mm

Best For

High-speed five-axis machining of aluminium structural parts Aerospace ribs, frames and panels up to 2,000 mm long Composite and light-alloy tooling Simultaneous five-axis contouring with fast head axes

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What kind of spindle does the Huron KX 50 M have?

An HSK 63-A spindle with 75 kW, 75 Nm and a maximum of 20,000 rpm. The characteristic speed is 9,550 rpm, so the spindle is designed to deliver its power at high speed. It suits light alloys far better than heavy steel roughing.

02 What are the head axis ranges on the KX 50 M?

The machine has a forked head. B swivels +/- 110° and C rotates +/- 360°, each at 100 rpm. Huron lists 4,000 Nm in the row for motor and clamping torque.

03 What is the difference between the KX 50 M and the KX 50 L?

Length. The KX 50 L has 3,000 mm of X travel, a 3,300 x 1,250 mm table and a 6,000 kg table load. The KX 50 M has 2,000 mm, 2,200 x 1,250 mm and 4,000 kg. Head, spindle, Y, Z and tool changer are the same.

04 How accurate is the KX 50 M?

Huron states 0.007 mm on X, Y and Z and 10 sec on B and C for positioning. Repeatability is 0.004 mm on the linear axes and 5 sec on the rotary ones.
