Overview
The DMG Mori DMC 210 u FD is the entry point to DMG Mori's portal-class 5-axis mill-turn platform, delivering 2,100 x 2,100 x 1,250 mm (82.7 x 82.7 x 49.2 in) of travel for workpieces up to 2,500 mm (98.4 in) diameter, 1,460 mm (57.5 in) height, and 6,000 kg (13,228 lb) in standard milling mode or 4,000 kg (8,819 lb) in FD mill-turn configuration. The portal gantry construction provides superior rigidity and thermal symmetry compared to C-frame and duoBLOCK designs at this workpiece scale.
The powerMASTER motor spindle delivers 1,000 Nm (738 ft-lb) through HSK-A100, while the torqueMASTER gear spindle option pushes to 1,800 Nm (1,328 ft-lb) for the most demanding roughing in titanium and Inconel. DMG Mori claims the biggest spindle range in the market for this machine class. Feed speed reaches 60 m/min (2,362 ipm) for productive rapid positioning across the large work envelope.
The FD DirectDrive table provides turning capability for large workpieces, enabling combined milling and turning operations on aerospace turbine discs, large engine casings, and massive valve bodies without re-chucking. The tool magazine holds up to 303 tools in the standard wheel configuration, with an optional Central Tool Storage (CTS) system supporting over 4,000 tools for complex production environments.
A pallet changer comes standard, and automation options include the RPS 4/5 rotary pallet storage, AMR 2000 autonomous mobile robot, and LPP linear pallet pool. Control options are SIEMENS SINUMERIK ONE or HEIDENHAIN TNC7 with CELOS X. The DMC 210 u FD sits between the DMC 160 u FD duoBLOCK and the DMC 270 u FD portal, making it the first step into portal-class 5-axis machining for shops outgrowing the duoBLOCK platform.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Portal gantry construction delivers superior rigidity and thermal symmetry at this workpiece scale compared to C-frame designs
- 2,500 mm max workpiece diameter and 6,000 kg milling capacity handle the largest aerospace and energy sector components
- TorqueMASTER at 1,800 Nm provides the spindle force for aggressive roughing in titanium and Inconel on massive parts
- CTS option supporting over 4,000 tools enables unprecedented tooling flexibility for complex multi-feature production
- Standard pallet changer plus multiple automation options (RPS, AMR, LPP) support fully automated large-part production
- FD mill-turn eliminates separate vertical turning lathe operations for combined milling and turning on large workpieces
Limitations
- Price above $2M is a major capital investment requiring consistently high-value large-part production to justify
- FD configuration reduces table load from 6,000 to 4,000 kg -- heavy workpieces needing only milling should use the non-FD variant
- Installation requires dedicated reinforced foundation, significant rigging, and climate-controlled environment
- Operational complexity demands highly skilled programmers and operators experienced with portal-class 5-axis mill-turn

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New machines typically price between $2,000,000 and $3,000,000 depending on spindle selection, tool magazine, accuracy packages, and automation. Full configuration with torqueMASTER, CTS, and automation approaches $3M.
02
The DMC 210 u FD and DMU 210 P FD share the same portal platform and travel envelope. The DMC designation typically refers to the pallet-changer-equipped production variant, while the DMU is the universal variant. Both offer identical core specifications.
03
CTS is an external tool storage system supporting over 4,000 tools, connected to the machine via a tool transport system. It enables shops to keep their entire tool library available without manual loading, supporting complex multi-feature parts and diverse production mixes.
04
Portal construction provides symmetric thermal behavior and equal rigidity in both X and Y directions. At 2,100 mm travel, C-frame machines develop asymmetric stiffness at the extremes of travel. The portal eliminates this, maintaining consistent cutting performance across the full envelope.
