Overview

Two fixed-bridge MEGA5 machines offer 3,000 mm (118.1 in) of X travel, and the AWEA MEGA5 P3026 is the narrower, faster one. Its bridge spans 1,700 mm (66.9 in) between the columns, Y travel is 2,620 mm (103.1 in), Z is 1,000 mm (39.4 in), and the listed spindle is an HSK-A63 unit that runs to 24,000 rpm.

The alternative is the MEGA5 P3032, with 3,200 mm (126.0 in) of Y, 2,700 mm (106.3 in) between columns, an HSK-A100 spindle at 12,000 rpm and a weight of 46,500 kg (102,513 lb). The MEGA5 P3026 weighs 35,000 kg (77,160 lb). Length does not separate the two. Part width and the kind of cutting do: work up to 1,500 mm (59.1 in) wide that rewards spindle speed belongs here.

One detail of the table is easy to miss. It is 3,260 x 1,500 mm (128.3 x 59.1 in), longer than the X stroke, yet the longest workpiece AWEA lists is 3,000 mm. The extra length is fixture and clamping space, not machining range. Load capacity is 10,000 kg (22,046 lb). AWEA notes that this frame carries the table on two guideways, with the X ball screw running down the centre.

X and Y both rapid at 20 m / min, Z at 15 m / min. This is the longest of the 1,700 mm machines to hold that X figure, because the MEGA5 P4026 falls to 15 m / min. Accuracy is unchanged from the shorter MEGA5 P2526 as well: ± 0.015 mm positioning by the JIS method and P ≦ 0.025 mm by the VDI method, over full travel.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Keeps the 20 m / min X rapid at 3,000 mm (118.1 in) of travel; the MEGA5 P4026 drops to 15 m / min
  • Table of 3,260 x 1,500 mm (128.3 x 59.1 in) extends past the X stroke, leaving clamping room at the ends
  • 35,000 kg (77,160 lb), against 46,500 kg (102,513 lb) for the MEGA5 P3032 with the same X travel
  • Positioning of ± 0.015 mm (JIS) and repeatability of ± 0.003 mm over full travel
  • TCH-20F head with 55 kW at S6 and 24,000 rpm for small-tool, high-speed work

Limitations

  • Only 1,500 mm (59.1 in) of part width; the MEGA5 P3032 takes 2,400 mm (94.5 in)
  • The table runs on two guideways, where AWEA gives the wider models four
  • HSK-A63 tooling limited to 8 kg (18 lb) per tool; the MEGA5 P3032 handles 15 kg (33 lb)
  • No listed Z option beyond 1,000 mm (39.4 in)

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Should I choose the MEGA5 P3026 or the MEGA5 P3032?

Both have 3,000 mm (118.1 in) of X. The MEGA5 P3026 has 2,620 mm (103.1 in) of Y, takes parts 1,500 mm (59.1 in) wide and is listed with a 24,000 rpm HSK-A63 spindle. The MEGA5 P3032 has 3,200 mm (126.0 in) of Y, takes parts 2,400 mm (94.5 in) wide and is listed with a 12,000 rpm HSK-A100 spindle. Choose by part width and by whether the work is high-speed finishing or heavier cutting.

02 Can the full 3,260 mm table length be machined?

No. X travel is 3,000 mm (118.1 in) and AWEA lists the maximum workpiece length as 3,000 mm, although the table is 3,260 x 1,500 mm (128.3 x 59.1 in). Treat the additional table length as room for clamps, stops and fixture plates. The T-slots are 22 x 170 mm.

03 How accurate is the MEGA5 P3026?

AWEA states positioning accuracy of ± 0.015 mm and repeatability of ± 0.003 mm over full travel by the JIS method. By the VDI method the figures are P ≦ 0.025 mm and Ps ≦ 0.020 mm. Absolute encoders on the rotary axes are standard equipment, and the head is water cooled to hold accuracy through long runs.

04 How is the B/C head driven and locked?

Direct drive motors turn both rotary axes, which AWEA describes as giving zero backlash. The B-axis has two motors to overcome the inertia of the tilting spindle. For cuts at a fixed angle a hydraulic clamping system locks the axes, and the bearings are cross roller types.

05 Does the spindle need a long warm-up?

AWEA states that the spindle reaches its optimal temperature within 10 minutes from a cold start and then stays stable, which it attributes to the spindle cooling system. The motor is built into the spindle, a layout the maker says reduces vibration. Coolant through spindle (CTS) is available as an option.
