Price estimate: uncertain

We have no price for the TOS Kuřim FRF 250 that we can cite and no estimate we can stand behind, so this page shows no number rather than a guess. A quote from TOS Kuřim or an authorised dealer is the reliable figure.

What moves the final price

  • Spindle, control and probing options
  • Tool changer capacity and tooling package
  • Automation — pallet changers, bar feeders, robot cells
  • Freight, rigging, installation and training
  • Region, dealer and time of year

Overview

With a 2,500 mm (98.4 in) table and 3,400 mm (133.9 in) of Y travel, the TOS Kuřim FRF 250 is the second size of the FRF gantry machining centres. The layout is a movable gantry with a fixed cross-rail. The columns stand 3,050 mm (120.1 in) apart, so the opening is wider than the table and the Y stroke is longer still.

Why does Y exceed the table width? On a gantry with exchangeable heads the spindle has to travel past the edge of the part to work its sides with an angular head, and it needs room to park and change heads. The catalogue does not spell out how the extra travel is used on this model, so treat that as the usual reason, not as a stated one.

Lengthwise the machine is built to order. X runs 4,000 - 24,000 by 1,000 mm (157.5 - 944.9 by 39.4 in). Z is 1,500 mm (59.1 in) and the table-to-cross-rail clearance is 2,050 mm (80.7 in), both identical to the FRF 200 and the FRF 300. The three sizes share the 4,000/6,000 rpm spindle options and 30/37/45 kW (40/50/60 hp) of drive power too. Choosing between them is a question of part width and nothing else.

Feeds are listed as 1 - 20,000 mm/min in X, Y and Z, with 1 - 30,000 mm/min in brackets. The series features name linear roller guideways, thermal stabilization of the headstock and of the exchangeable spindle heads, and axial tool cooling. For workholding the catalogue's accessories page describes fixed clamping plates built from segments with a table load of 6,000 kg/m2.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 3,400 mm (133.9 in) of Y travel over a 2,500 mm (98.4 in) table leaves stroke beyond both table edges
  • 3,050 mm (120.1 in) between the columns
  • Same 30/37/45 kW (40/50/60 hp) drive and 4,000/6,000 rpm spindle options as the larger FRF sizes
  • Thermal stabilization of the headstock and of the exchangeable spindle heads is listed for the series
  • X travel from 4,000 mm to 24,000 mm in 1,000 mm steps

Limitations

  • Z travel is 1,500 mm (59.1 in) with no longer option in the table
  • The cross-rail does not move, so 2,050 mm (80.7 in) under it is the height limit for part plus fixture
  • Feed above 1 - 20,000 mm/min appears only in brackets, as 1 - 30,000 mm/min, and the catalogue does not explain the condition
  • No tool changer capacity, torque or machine weight is published for this size

Best For

Plate and frame work up to about the 2,500 mm (98.4 in) table width Side machining with angular heads, using Y travel beyond the table edge Long parts that suit a gantry travelling 4,000 mm to 24,000 mm in X

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What are the travels of the FRF 250?

X is 4,000 - 24,000 by 1,000 mm (157.5 - 944.9 by 39.4 in), chosen at order. Y is 3,400 mm (133.9 in). Z is 1,500 mm (59.1 in). All three axes are listed with a feed range of 1 - 20,000 mm/min, and 1 - 30,000 mm/min in brackets.

02 How wide a part fits between the columns of the FRF 250?

The clearance between the columns is 3,050 mm (120.1 in) and the table is 2,500 mm (98.4 in) wide. Height under the fixed cross-rail is 2,050 mm (80.7 in). A part that overhangs the table still has to pass between the columns along the whole X travel, because the gantry moves over it.

03 Which guideways does the FRF 250 use?

The FRF feature list names linear roller guideways in the linear axes. Other gantry series in the same catalogue offer linear roller or hydrostatic guideways; the FRF list mentions roller guideways only.

04 Is the FRF 250 or the FRF 300 the better fit?

They differ in width. The FRF 300 has a 3,000 mm (118.1 in) table, 3,900 mm (153.5 in) of Y and 3,550 mm (139.8 in) between columns. Everything else in the two columns of the table is the same, so pick the size by the widest part you expect, with room for clamps.
