Overview

The Emco UMILL 1500 is a 5-axis gantry machine that mills and turns. Its three linear axes travel 1,500 mm (59.1 in), 1,500 mm (59.1 in) and 1,100 mm (43.3 in), and the part sits on an NC rotary table that comes in two forms: a milling table of 1400 x 1200 mm for 6,000 kg (13,228 lb), or a mill-turn table of ø 1400 mm that spins at up to 260 rpm.

The mill-turn table turns the machine into a vertical lathe for the part already clamped on it. A housing, ring or flange can be turned on its outside and inside diameters, then drilled and milled at any angle without being moved. The cost is load capacity, which drops to 3,500 kg (7,716 lb) on the turning table. Both tables use a torque motor rated 3,000 Nm (2212.8 lb-ft).

Two milling heads are listed for this model. The basic E58 head has an electrospindle of 45 / 58 kW (S1 / S6) and 300 / 372 Nm (S1 / S6) at 12,000 rpm, with an HSK-A(T)100 taper that accepts turning tools. The E61 head is the high-speed choice: 20,000 rpm and 50 / 63 kW (S1 / S6) on HSK-A63. Both have a 15° undercut, so the tool can reach slightly below horizontal.

The tool magazine has 88 / 122 / 203 pockets. All axes feed at 60 m/min (2,362 ipm). Through-tool coolant is listed at 20 l/min; 40 bar and the tank holds 2500 l (paper band filter).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Milling and turning in one setup on a rotary table that reaches up to 260 rpm
  • Milling table rated for 6,000 kg (13,228 lb)
  • Head undercut of 15° on both listed milling heads
  • Tool magazine with 88 / 122 / 203 pockets
  • Feed rate of 60 m/min (2,362 ipm) on all linear axes

Limitations

  • The mill-turn table carries 3,500 kg (7,716 lb), less than the milling table
  • The High Power E67 head is listed for the UMILL 1800 only
  • Basic rotary table speed is 20 rpm; turning needs the mill-turn table
  • Coolant plant with a 2500 l (paper band filter) tank adds to the installation

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Can the UMILL 1500 turn as well as mill?

Yes, with the NC rotary table for mill-turn operations. That table is ø 1400 mm in size, carries 3,500 kg (7,716 lb) and runs at up to 260 rpm. The basic rotary table is a positioning and milling table with a maximum speed of 20 rpm.

02 What are the axis travels of the UMILL 1500?

X travel is 1,500 mm (59.1 in), Y 1,500 mm (59.1 in) and Z 1,100 mm (43.3 in). The feed rate is 60 m/min (2,362 ipm). The milling head adds the two rotary motions for 5-axis work and has an undercut of 15°.

03 Which milling heads are available?

The brochure lists the E58 head as basic equipment, with 45 / 58 kW (S1 / S6), 300 / 372 Nm (S1 / S6) and 12,000 rpm, and the E61 high-speed head with 50 / 63 kW (S1 / S6), 100 / 125 Nm (S1 / S6) and 20,000 rpm.

04 How does the UMILL 1500 differ from the UMILL 1800?

The UMILL 1800 is larger, with 1,800 mm (70.9 in) of X travel, a milling table rated for 10,000 kg (22,046 lb) and an additional High Power head. The UMILL 1500 travels 1,500 mm (59.1 in) in X and carries 6,000 kg (13,228 lb).
