Overview

Quaser describes the UX500APC as a highly versatile five-axis VMC with automatic pallet changer. The pallet is □400 mm (□15.8"), the maximum work piece is Ø500 x 350 mm (Ø19.7" x 13.8"), and the load capacity is 200 kg (441 lbs).

The pallet changer creates what Quaser calls a dual work zone. While one pallet is in the cut, the other is outside for unloading and reloading, so the spindle does not wait for the operator. On 5-axis parts, where fixturing and indicating can take as long as the cycle, that changes the utilization of the machine more than any faster rapid would.

How does it differ from the plain UX500? The envelope shrinks slightly to make room for the pallet system: Y travel is 508 mm (20.0") instead of the UX500's 540 mm (21.3"), and the swing is Ø500 mm (Ø19.7"). X and Z are unchanged at 712 mm (28.0") and 515 mm (20.3"). In return the magazine grows to 48 tools as standard and the spindle is offered across a band, listed as 9K ~ 15K.

Quaser says the machine is modular and expandable, and that end users can expand the number of work pallets and tools according to machining demand. That is the route from two pallets to a pallet pool. The 40 taper magazine accepts tools of 76.2 mm (3") diameter, 125 mm (4.9") with neighboring pots empty, and 280 mm (11.0") length.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Automatic pallet changer with a dual work zone, so loading does not stop the spindle
  • 48 tools as standard, against 30 on the UX500
  • Number of work pallets and tools can be expanded, per Quaser
  • Spindle speed band listed as 9K ~ 15K
  • Same 712 mm (28.0") X and 515 mm (20.3") Z travel as the UX500

Limitations

  • Pallet load is 200 kg (441 lbs), including the fixture
  • Y travel of 508 mm (20.0") and a Ø500 mm (Ø19.7") swing are slightly smaller than on the UX500
  • Work piece height is limited to 350 mm, against 400 mm on the UX500
  • The page gives no pallet change time, rotary axis range or spindle power

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does APC mean on the Quaser UX500APC?

Automatic pallet changer. Quaser describes a dual work zone design that reduces machine down time due to work piece loading and unloading. The pallet is □400 mm (□15.8") and carries 200 kg (441 lbs).

02 What size parts fit the UX500APC?

The maximum work piece size is Ø500 x 350 mm (Ø19.7" x 13.8") and the maximum swing is Ø500 mm (Ø19.7"). Linear travels are 712 mm (28.0") in X, 508 mm (20.0") in Y and 515 mm (20.3") in Z.

03 How does the UX500APC differ from the UX500?

The UX500APC adds the pallet changer, has 48 tools as standard instead of 30, and lists a spindle band of 9K ~ 15K where the UX500 shows 12K. Its envelope is a little smaller: Ø500 x 350 mm (Ø19.7" x 13.8") against Ø540 x 400 mm (Ø21.3" x 15.8") on the UX500.

04 Can more pallets be added to the UX500APC?

Quaser states that the UX500APC is modular and expandable and that end users can expand the number of work pallets and tools according to the machining demand. The maker does not publish the available pallet counts on this page, so ask for the configurations.
