Overview

Six metres of X travel and a 23,000 kg (50,705 lb) table: the Hartford HSA-628EA is the narrow six-metre model of the five-face HSA line. Its table is 6,000 x 2,500 mm (236.2 x 98.4 in) with twenty-three T-slots, X travel is 6,000 mm (236.2 in) and Y travel 2,800 mm (110.2 in).

Above five metres Hartford makes X-axis ballscrew support standard, and this is the first EA size to which that statement applies without doubt. A six-metre screw is heavy, and supporting it limits sag and protects both positioning accuracy and the screw.

Only two EA models exist at this length. The other, the HSA-636EA, has a 6,000 x 3,000 mm (236.2 x 118.1 in) table and 3,600 mm (141.7 in) of Y but adds just 1,000 kg of capacity. For long parts that stay inside 2,500 mm of width, such as machine beds, crane girder sections and extrusion tooling, the 628EA does the same job on a narrower machine.

The table for this model lists a hybrid built-in spindle at 10,000 rpm and a gear head at 6,000 rpm with an 8,000 rpm option, in #50 taper. Hartford's page adds DDS as a spindle choice. Z travel is 1,000 mm, optionally 1,200 mm.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 6,000 mm (236.2 in) of X travel with ballscrew support as standard
  • 23,000 kg (50,705 lb) table load
  • Hybrid built-in spindle at 10,000 rpm besides the 6,000 rpm gear head
  • Automatic angular head switching compartment for unattended head changes

Limitations

  • Y travel of 2,800 mm (110.2 in) is close to the 2,500 mm table width
  • Y-axis ballscrew support is not stated as standard for the x28 EA
  • No intermediate width at six metres: the only alternative is the 3,000 mm wide HSA-636EA

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How long is the X travel on the HSA-628EA?

6,000 mm (236.2 in), equal to the table length. Y travel is 2,800 mm (110.2 in) and Z travel 1,000 mm, with 1,200 mm as an option. The table is 6,000 x 2,500 mm (236.2 x 98.4 in).

02 Does the HSA-628EA have X-axis ballscrew support?

Yes. Hartford states that X axis ballscrew support is the standard configuration for models above 5 meters, and this is a six-metre machine. For the Y axis the maker lists the x28 EAY, x32 EAY and x36 models as standard, which does not include the x28 EA.

03 What is the difference between the HSA-628EA and the HSA-636EA?

Width. The HSA-636EA has a 6,000 x 3,000 mm (236.2 x 118.1 in) table, 3,600 mm (141.7 in) of Y travel and a 24,000 kg (52,910 lb) rating, against a 2,500 mm wide table and 23,000 kg on the HSA-628EA.

04 What tooling does the HSA-628EA take?

BT-50 shanks as standard, with CAT-50, DIN50 and BBT-50 listed as alternatives, in a #50 spindle. The magazine holds 32 tools and can be ordered with 40 or 60.
