Overview
The Mazak VORTEX i-V is a vertical 5-axis machining center built for large, complex parts that exceed the work envelope of trunnion-style machines like the VARIAXIS. Instead of tilting the workpiece, the VORTEX i-V uses a B/C-axis nutating spindle head that tilts and rotates above a large fixed table, keeping heavy parts stationary while the tool approaches from any angle.
Four models span two pallet sizes: the i-630V/6 and i-630V/6S on a 630 x 630 mm (24.8 x 24.8 in) pallet, and the i-800V/8 and i-800V/8S on an 800 x 800 mm (31.5 x 31.5 in) pallet. The S variants are single-pallet machines, while the standard versions include a two-pallet changer. Maximum workpiece diameters range from 1,050 mm (41.3 in) on the i-630V/6 to 1,700 mm (66.9 in) on the i-800V/8S.
The standard spindle runs 10,000 RPM with CAT No.50 taper at 37 kW (50 hp). An optional 5,000 RPM high-torque version maintains the same power with more low-end grunt. For shops needing speed, an HSK-T100 spindle at 15,000 RPM pushes output to 56 kW (75 hp). The B-axis tilts through a working range and C-axis provides continuous rotation, both using backlash-free roller gear cam positioning at 0.0001-degree increments.
Linear roller guides on all axes provide high rigidity for heavy roughing. The MAZATROL SmoothAi CNC with Smooth Ai Spindle uses vibration sensing and AI adaptive control to detect and suppress chatter automatically. MAZA-CHECK 5-axis calibration keeps the complex multi-axis geometry in spec.
The VORTEX i-V competes with large vertical 5-axis machines from DMG Mori (DMU/DMC series), Hermle (C 52/C 62), and Okuma (MU-6300V/MU-8000V). Where Mazak differentiates is on the combination of No.50 taper authority, SmoothAi intelligence, and PALLETECH-ready automation at competitive pricing for this machine class.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Nutating spindle head keeps heavy workpieces stationary while providing full 5-axis access from any angle
- No.50 taper standard with up to 56 kW (75 hp) HSK-T100 option for serious material removal in steel and titanium
- Workpiece capacity up to 1,700 mm diameter and 1,600 mm height covers large aerospace structural parts
- Two-pallet changer standard on non-S models for basic unattended production with off-cycle loading
- SmoothAi with AI chatter suppression automatically optimizes cutting conditions on large complex parts
- Roller gear cam B/C positioning with 0.0001-degree indexing ensures accuracy across the large work envelope
- PALLETECH-ready for integration into multi-machine flexible manufacturing cells
Limitations
- Starting price above $500,000 puts it beyond reach for many job shops; fully optioned approaches $900,000
- Large machine footprint requires significant floor space and foundation preparation
- Nutating head design adds complexity to programming and collision avoidance vs trunnion machines
- Single-pallet S variants sacrifice max workpiece diameter compared to fixed-table alternatives
- Heavy machine weight requires substantial floor loading capacity and rigging for installation

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New pricing ranges from about $500,000 for a base i-630V/6S to over $900,000 for a fully optioned i-800V/8 with HSK-T100 spindle and PALLETECH. Most configurations fall in the $600,000-$750,000 range.
02
VORTEX i-V uses a nutating spindle head over a fixed table for much larger parts (up to 1,700 mm). VARIAXIS uses a trunnion table for smaller parts. VORTEX has No.50 taper standard. Choose VORTEX for large heavy parts; VARIAXIS for smaller precision work.
03
Standard 10K/37 kW CAT50 covers general large-part work. 5K high-torque for heavy steel roughing. 15K HSK-T100 at 56 kW for shops needing both speed and power for aerospace aluminum and titanium.
04
Non-S models include a two-pallet changer for off-cycle loading. Full PALLETECH integration enables multi-machine unmanned cells. The SmoothAi CNC monitors cutting conditions and adjusts automatically.
05
The i-800V/8S handles up to 1,700 mm diameter and 1,600 mm height. The i-630V/6 with two-pallet changer handles up to 1,050 mm diameter. Table load capacity varies by model.
