Overview
The Mazak VORTEX i-V series covers four vertical 5-axis machining centers with a 10,000 rpm CAT No.50 spindle on a B-axis and a rotary C-axis table. Two have a 2 pallet changer, the VORTEX i-630V/6 and the VORTEX i-800V/8, and two are single-pallet machines, the VORTEX i-630V/6S and the VORTEX i-800V/8S.
The two pallet-changer models mark out the sizes. The VORTEX i-630V/6 has 56 in (1,422 mm) of X and 41 in (1,041 mm) of both Y and Z, carries 3,307 lb (1,500 kg) and weighs 71,980 lb (32,650 kg). The VORTEX i-800V/8 has 67 in (1,702 mm) of X, 59 in (1,499 mm) of Y and 45 in (1,143 mm) of Z, carries 5,511 lb (2,500 kg) and weighs 85,207 lb (38,649 kg). The step up is mostly in Y. The series tops out at 6,614 lb (3,000 kg) of table load, more than the VORTEX i-800V/8 carries, so the highest load belongs to a single-pallet model.
All four share the cutting hardware. The standard spindle is rated 30 kW (40 HP) continuous and 37 kW (50 HP) at 40% ED, with 183 ft-lb (248 Nm) of continuous torque and 260 ft-lb (353 Nm) at 40% ED. The magazine holds 43 tools of up to 66 lb (30 kg), Ø5 in (127 mm) with full pockets and Ø10 in (254 mm) with the adjacent ones empty; maximum tool length is 20 in (508 mm) to 26 in (660 mm) depending on the model. The B-axis works from -30° to +120°, and rapids are 2,047 ipm (52 m/min) on X, Y and Z.
Mazak drives both rotary axes through roller gear cams, the C-axis table indexing in 0.0001° increments, and runs linear roller guides on X, Y and Z. Cone couplings clamp pallet to table. Where the standard spindle does not suit, the options are a 5000 rpm CAT No.50 spindle for high-torque roughing of cast iron and steel, a 15000 rpm HSK-T100 spindle, and BIG-PLUS No.50 or HSK-A100 two-face contact tooling.

The standard milling spindle is CAT No.50 at 10000 rpm, intended for cast iron, steel and non-ferrous material. Options are a CAT No.50, 5000 rpm spindle for high-torque rough machining, an HSK-T100, 15000 rpm spindle for non-ferrous and difficult-to-cut materials, and BIG-PLUS No.50 or HSK-A100 two-face contact tooling. A Smooth Ai spindle, which changes machining conditions when its vibration sensor detects chatter, is optional too.

It is the smaller and quicker of the two. The VORTEX e-V runs from 74 in (1,880 mm) to 91 in (2,311 mm) of X and carries up to 15,432 lb (7,000 kg), with rapids of 1,654 ipm (42 m/min). The i-V models stay within 67 in (1,702 mm) of X and 6,614 lb (3,000 kg) but traverse at 2,047 ipm (52 m/min) and have 183 ft-lb (248 Nm) of continuous torque against the 141 ft-lb (191 Nm) continuous of the VORTEX e-V.
