Overview

The Hurco VMX84SWi is the largest machine in Hurco's entire 5-axis lineup — 84 inches of X travel with a B-axis swivel head built for the biggest, heaviest parts in the shop. This is a machine you buy when your work literally won't fit anywhere else in Hurco's catalog.

Travels are an enormous 2,134 x 865 x 762 mm (84 x 34 x 30 in) with a 2,184 x 865 mm (86 x 34 in) fixed table rated for 2,268 kg (5,000 lb). Every dimension on this machine is oversized — 34 inches of Y travel, 30 inches of Z travel, and a table that measures over 7 feet long. The spindle-to-table clearance ranges from 127 to 889 mm (5 to 35 in), accommodating extremely tall fixtures and parts.

The B-axis swivels +/-92 degrees for angular spindle access. No rotary table — the VMX84SWi is a 4+1 machine that prioritizes table capacity and rigidity over full 5-axis rotation. For the parts this machine handles, table load capacity matters more than a rotary axis.

The spindle runs 12,000 RPM through a CAT 40 / Big Plus taper, delivering 30 kW (40 hp) of peak power with 120.2 Nm (88.7 ft-lbs) of torque at 2,900 RPM. The 40-tool ATC handles standard tooling with 76 mm max diameter and 300 mm max length — the longest tool allowance in the SWi family.

Rapids are proportionally slower due to the massive travel distances: 18 m/min (709 ipm) on X/Y and 13.5 m/min (530 ipm) on Z. B-axis rapid runs at 33.3 RPM. These numbers reflect the mass of the moving components, not a design shortcoming.

At 16,730 kg (36,806 lb), this is by far the heaviest machine in Hurco's 5-axis lineup. Floor space is 7,557 x 4,502 mm (298 x 177 in) — plan your shop layout around this machine, not the other way around. Power draw is 54 KVA. WinMax control with 3D DXF import handles programming.

New pricing runs $350,000-$460,000. This machine has few direct competitors in the swivel-head category at this travel range and price point.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 84 inches of X travel covers oversized parts that won't fit on any other Hurco 5-axis machine
  • 2,268 kg (5,000 lb) table load handles the heaviest steel castings and forgings in the lineup
  • 86 x 34 inch table is over 7 feet long — room for the largest fixtures and multi-part setups
  • 762 mm (30 in) Z-axis travel provides exceptional clearance for tall parts and long-reach tooling
  • 16,730 kg machine weight delivers outstanding vibration damping during heavy cuts
  • WinMax conversational programming keeps this large machine accessible to shops without dedicated CAM departments

Limitations

  • 7,557 x 4,502 mm footprint requires a dedicated section of the shop — this machine dominates floor plans
  • 18/13.5 m/min rapids are the slowest in Hurco's 5-axis lineup, adding significant non-cutting time
  • CAT 40 taper is arguably undersized for a machine this large — 50-taper would better match the envelope
  • No C-axis rotary table limits to 4+1 indexed operations on the B-axis only
  • 16,730 kg weight requires a specially designed reinforced foundation with proper grouting and leveling

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a Hurco VMX84SWi cost?

New pricing runs $350,000-$460,000 depending on options. At this machine size, through-spindle coolant, probing, full chip management, and coolant chiller are essentially mandatory. Used machines are rare due to low production volume but trade in the $200,000-$320,000 range.

02 Should I consider a 50-taper spindle for a machine this large?

Many machinists would say yes. The CAT 40 taper limits tool rigidity on the largest cuts this machine's envelope can support. Hurco chose 40-taper for tooling commonality across their lineup and lower tooling costs. For heavy steel hogging, consider the HM1700Ri (CAT 50) or look at 50-taper boring mills.

03 How slow are the 18 m/min rapids in practice?

A full 84-inch X rapid takes about 7 seconds — compared to under 3 seconds on the 42-inch VMX42SWi. Over a complex program with hundreds of repositions, this adds up. For heavy roughing with long tool engagement, rapids matter less. For finishing with frequent repositions, consider programming to minimize full-travel rapids.

04 What power supply does the VMX84SWi need?

54 KVA at full load. This requires a properly sized electrical panel, typically 100+ amp service at 480V 3-phase. Most industrial facilities can accommodate this, but verify your panel capacity before ordering. The machine also needs 100 PSI shop air supply.

05 Can I run multiple setups on the 86-inch table simultaneously?

Yes, and this is one of the machine's greatest strengths. The 86 x 34 inch table supports ganging multiple fixtures or parts across the table surface, using the 84-inch X travel to reach them all. Combined with the 40-tool ATC, you can run multiple different parts in a single program without table changes.
