Overview
The Chevalier UNi5X-400 is a compact five-axis vertical machining center with a tilting and rotating table Ø12.6 in (Ø320 mm) across. The trunnion carries 220 lb (100 kg), tilts through 150° (+30° / -120°) on the A axis and turns 360° on the C axis, so a part can be cut on five sides and at compound angles without being re-clamped.
Linear travels are 29.5 in (750 mm) in X, 24 in (610 mm) in Y and 21.7 in (550 mm) in Z, generous for a table of this size because the spindle has to reach around a tilted part. The spindle is a direct drive CT40 unit at 12,000 rpm, with 15,000 rpm listed as an option. Chevalier describes a large-diameter spindle carried on four P4 class angular-contact ball bearings.
The maker publishes accuracy figures, which few builders in this class do. Positioning accuracy is 0.0004 in (0.010 mm) and repeatability 0.0003 in (0.007 mm) on the linear axes. The A axis positions to 12 sec and repeats to 5 sec. The C axis row reads 20 (12) sec for positioning and 10 (4) sec for repeatability, the bracketed figures applying with the optional angle encoder.
The column is a one-piece inverted Y shape, the ball screws are pre-tensioned Class C3, and the servo motors couple directly to them. A 30+1 arm type changer serves the spindle. The standard control is a Fanuc 0i-MF, with a Fanuc 31i optional. The machine weighs 15,510 lb (7,050 kg) on a 96.5 in x 90 in footprint and stands 124 in high.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Tilting A axis of 150° (+30° / -120°) and a 360° C axis for five-sided and simultaneous work
- Published accuracy figures: 0.0004 in (0.010 mm) positioning and 0.0003 in (0.007 mm) repeatability
- Direct drive 12,000 rpm spindle with a 15,000 rpm option
- 29.5 in (750 mm) by 24 in (610 mm) by 21.7 in (550 mm) of linear travel around a small trunnion
- Compact 96.5 in x 90 in footprint for a five-axis machine
Limitations
- Table load is 220 lb (100 kg), fixture included
- Workpiece envelope is limited to Ø15.7 in (Ø400 mm) on the trunnion
- The better C axis accuracy figures apply only with the optional angle encoder
- The Fanuc 31i control is an option; the standard control is the 0i-MF
- Rotary axes turn at 25 rpm, slow for high-feed simultaneous contouring

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The table is Ø12.6 in (Ø320 mm) and the workpiece dimensions are listed as Ø15.7 in x H13.7 in (Ø400 x H350 mm). Maximum table load is 220 lb (100 kg). Travels are 29.5 in (750 mm) in X, 24 in (610 mm) in Y and 21.7 in (550 mm) in Z.
02
The A axis tilts through 150° (+30° / -120°) and the C axis rotates 360°. Both are listed at 25 rpm. The A axis positions to 12 sec and repeats to 5 sec; the C axis is listed at 20 (12) sec and 10 (4) sec, where the bracketed values are with the optional angle encoder.
03
A CT40 direct drive spindle running at 12,000 rpm, with 15,000 rpm as an option. The power row reads (F) 11/15 kW, (S) 11 kW, (H) 10 kW; the letters are not explained in the table, so ask which rating applies to the control you choose.
04
The changer is a 30+1 arm type. Tools can be 3 in (76 mm) in diameter with adjacent pockets occupied or 5.9 in (150 mm) with them empty, up to 11.8 in (300 mm) long and 15.4 lb (7 kg).
05
The table lists a Fanuc 0i-MF as the control and a Fanuc 31i as optional. For simultaneous five-axis contouring, check with Chevalier which functions each control includes before settling on one.
