Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Fehlmann PICOMAX 550 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Fehlmann PICOMAX 550 is a compact 5-axis machining center with 550 mm (21.7 in) of X travel and 400 mm (15.7 in) each in Y and Z. The swivelling B axis covers 180° (+135° / -45°), C turns 0° - 360°, and the maximum swing circle for 5-axis milling is 500 mm with a workpiece height up to 370 mm.
It is the entry model of a pair. One spindle is listed, 50 - 12,000 rpm with 9.7 kW (13.0 hp) at S6 (40% ED), and tools sit in a disk magazine for 30 tools. The PICOMAX 550 PRO, on the same travels, adds 20,000 rpm and 30,000 rpm spindles and a chain magazine for 60 tools. If the work is general 5-axis milling in small series, or training, 12,000 rpm and 30 pockets cover it. Long tool lists and small-cutter finishing point to the PRO.
Both rotary axes use direct, cooled torque drives, which Fehlmann describes as backlash-free. Even the basic version is designed for 5-axis simultaneous machining as well as positioning, under a Heidenhain TNC7 with a 19” touch screen. The feed rate / rapid feed row reads 1-24,000 mm/min, slower than the 30,000 mm/min of the PICOMAX 550 PRO.
The machine is operated from the front, and the tool magazine can be loaded from the front while it is cutting. The footprint is small for a 5-axis machine: 1.95 m wide and 2.55 m deep, 2.65 m high, at 5,050 kg (11,133 lb). The distance from table to spindle nose is 80 - 480 mm. Through-spindle high-pressure coolant with chip conveyor, tool and part measuring systems and minimum-quantity lubrication are options.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 5-axis simultaneous machining in the basic version, with B covering 180° (+135° / -45°)
- Swing circle of Ø 500 mm for 5-axis milling leaves space for clamping devices
- Direct, cooled torque drives on the rotary axes, described by Fehlmann as backlash-free
- Compact: 1.95 m wide, 2.55 m deep and 5,050 kg (11,133 lb)
- Tool magazine can be loaded from the front during machining
- Heidenhain TNC7 control with 19” touch screen
Limitations
- Only one spindle is listed: 50 - 12,000 rpm with 9.7 kW (13.0 hp)
- The disk magazine holds 30 tools; the PICOMAX 550 PRO has a chain magazine for 60 tools
- Feed rate / rapid feed tops out at 24,000 mm/min (945 ipm)
- Workpiece height is limited to 370 mm and Z travel to 400 mm (15.7 in)
- Through-spindle high-pressure coolant and measuring systems are options

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Spindle, magazine and feed. The PICOMAX 550 has one spindle of 50 - 12,000 rpm with 9.7 kW (13.0 hp), a disk magazine for 30 tools and a feed rate / rapid feed row up to 24,000 mm/min. The PICOMAX 550 PRO adds 20,000 rpm and 30,000 rpm spindles, a chain magazine for 60 tools and 30,000 mm/min, and weighs 5,250 kg against 5,050 kg. Travels and swing circle are the same.
02
Yes. Fehlmann states that even the basic version is designed for universal 5-axis milling with positioning as well as for 5-axis simultaneous machining. B swivels 180° (+135° / -45°) and C covers 0° - 360°, both on direct, cooled torque drives, and the Heidenhain TNC7 is set up for simultaneous work.
03
The maximum swing circle for 5-axis milling is 500 mm and the maximum workpiece height 370 mm. Linear travels are 550 mm in X and 400 mm in Y and Z, with 80 - 480 mm between table and spindle nose. Remember that clamping devices have to fit inside the same swing circle.
04
The tool changing system is a disk magazine for 30 tools. It has integrated tool management and can be loaded from the front during machining, so tools can be exchanged without stopping the cycle. Jobs that need more than 30 tools in the machine are a reason to look at the 60-tool PICOMAX 550 PRO.
05
Fehlmann gives the dimensions as 1.95 / 2.55 / 2.65 m for width, depth and height, and the weight as 5,050 kg (11,133 lb). Operation and tool loading are both from the front, which helps when the machine stands against a wall or between other machines.
