Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Modig IM-8 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Modig IM-8 is a single-spindle 5-axis machining center that Modig lists with an inverted orientation, built around an 800 mm (31 in) diameter A/C trunnion table and linear travels of 1,000 x 1,000 x 800 mm (39 x 39 x 31 in). A 4-axis X/Y/Z/A version is offered as an option. The table carries 850 kg (1,874 lbs), and the part can be 700 mm (28 in) high within a maximum interference diameter of 1,200 mm (47 in).
The A-axis covers 300 degrees, which Modig writes as +/-120 +60, and the C-axis turns 360 degrees continuously. Continuous C rotation is what a turning operation needs, and mill-turn is on the list at 1,200 rpm, so round features can be turned in the same clamping as the milled ones. It is an option, not part of the base machine.
The standard spindle runs to 24,000 rpm with 50 kW (68 hp) S1 and 95 Nm (70 ft-lbs) S1 through an HSK-A63 interface. With 95 Nm at the tool, the base machine is set up for high-speed cutting with small and medium tools, which suits aluminum and composite better than heavy roughing in steel or titanium. The options change the picture: 30,000 rpm, 150 kW (201 hp) and 550 Nm (406 ft-lbs) are each listed, together with HSK-A100 (SK40/50, BT40/50). The table does not say which of those optional figures belong to the same spindle, so ask for the speed, power and torque of one specific spindle before matching it to the work.
The magazine holds 60 tools as standard and up to 300 as an option, with a chip-to-chip time of 6 sec. A tool can be 200 mm (8 in) in diameter and weigh 10 kg (22 lbs). Tool length is 400 mm (16 in) on the standard machine and up to 650 mm (26 in) as an option. Z travel is 800 mm (31 in) and the part can be 700 mm (28 in) tall; tool length and part height both draw on that stroke, so check reach and clearance on tall work. Modig names cast iron, die casting, aluminum, titanium, composite and steel as materials.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- A/C trunnion table of 800 mm (31 in) diameter rated for 850 kg (1,874 lbs), with 360 degrees of continuous C rotation
- Standard spindle gives 24,000 rpm, 50 kW (68 hp) S1 and 95 Nm (70 ft-lbs) S1 on HSK-A63
- Options raise the listed limits to 30,000 rpm, 150 kW (201 hp) and 550 Nm (406 ft-lbs), with HSK-A100 available
- Magazine grows from 60 tools standard to as many as 300 with the option, and a change takes 6 sec chip to chip
- Mill-turn is offered as an option at 1,200 rpm, so turned and milled features can share one setup
- Tools up to 200 mm (8 in) in diameter, and up to 650 mm (26 in) long with the long-tool option
Limitations
- Standard torque is 95 Nm (70 ft-lbs) S1; the 550 Nm (406 ft-lbs) figure that heavier cuts in steel or titanium call for is an option
- Maximum tool weight is 10 kg (22 lbs), which restricts large cutters even though 200 mm (8 in) of diameter is allowed
- Part height stops at 700 mm (28 in) and table load at 850 kg (1,874 lbs), so large structural parts are outside the envelope
- The table lists no feed rate, acceleration or accuracy figure, so axis dynamics have to be confirmed with Modig
- Mill-turn, the 300-tool magazine and the 650 mm (26 in) tool length are all options

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The A/C trunnion table is 800 mm (31 in) in diameter and carries 850 kg (1,874 lbs). Maximum part height is 700 mm (28 in) and the maximum interference diameter is 1,200 mm (47 in). Linear travels are 1,000 mm (39 in) in X, 1,000 mm (39 in) in Y and 800 mm (31 in) in Z. Fixture weight counts against the 850 kg, so add it to the part before judging a heavy job.
02
Standard is 24,000 rpm with 50 kW (68 hp) S1 and 95 Nm (70 ft-lbs) S1 on an HSK-A63 taper. Modig lists 30,000 rpm, 150 kW (201 hp) and 550 Nm (406 ft-lbs) as options, and HSK-A100 (SK40/50, BT40/50) as the optional interface. The table does not pair those optional figures with each other, so confirm the full rating of the spindle you are quoted.
03
Mill-turn is listed as an option at 1,200 rpm. The C-axis rotates 360 degrees continuously and the A-axis covers 300 degrees (+/-120 +60). Without the option the machine is a 5-axis mill, or a 4-axis X/Y/Z/A machine if that configuration is ordered.
04
60 tools as standard and up to 300 as an option. Each tool can be up to 200 mm (8 in) in diameter and 10 kg (22 lbs). Maximum length is 400 mm (16 in) on the standard machine and up to 650 mm (26 in) as an option. Tool change is 6 sec, chip to chip.
05
Modig lists cast iron, die casting, aluminum, titanium, composite and steel. The standard spindle, 95 Nm (70 ft-lbs) S1 at up to 24,000 rpm, fits the light alloys and composite. For the harder materials on that list, look at the optional 550 Nm (406 ft-lbs) torque figure and the HSK-A100 interface.
06
The MTX is listed at up to 30,000 rpm and up to 150 kW (201 hp) S1, figures the IM-8 reaches only with options over its standard 24,000 rpm and 50 kW (68 hp) S1. The MTX magazine comes in 60 / 120 / 240 / 360 sizes, against 60 standard and up to 300 as an option on the IM-8. The IM-8 is the one built around an 800 mm (31 in) A/C trunnion table.
