Overview

The Fryer 5X-100 extends the articulating-head 5-axis concept to 100 in (2,540 mm) of X travel. It keeps the 18,000 rpm, 35 hp (26.1 kW) peak spindle and linear ways of the 5X-60 and sets them over a 30 x 112 in (762 x 2,845 mm) table. Y travel is 35 in (889 mm) and Z travel 34 in (864 mm).

Long aerospace parts are the reason for this size. Wing ribs, stringers, spars and floor beams are several feet long, a few inches thick and full of angled pockets and holes. On a table-tilting machine they would need re-fixturing for every angle; here they are clamped once and the head, with A travel of +/- 95° and C travel of +/- 200°, comes to them. The door opens 105 in (2,667 mm) for loading by crane.

Some figures step down from the short model and should be planned for. Rapids are 800 ipm (20.3 m/min) instead of the 1,200 ipm (30.5 m/min) of the 5X-60, though the cutting feed rate still reaches 800 ipm on X, Y and Z and 100 ipm on A and C. Table load stays at 5,000 lb (2,268 kg). Weight rises to 25,500 lb (11,567 kg).

With 40 ft-lb (54 Nm) of spindle torque this is a machine for aluminium, composites and finishing passes in steel, not for heavy roughing in tough alloys; for that Fryer builds the box way 5X-120 with 90 ft-lb (122 Nm). Chips on a table this long are handled by the dual chip auger or conveyor options for 100" - 160" of X travel.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the work envelope of the Fryer 5X-100?

Linear travels are 100 x 35 x 34 in (2,540 x 889 x 864 mm), with A travel of +/- 95° and C travel of +/- 200°. The table is 30 x 112 in (762 x 2,845 mm). Spindle nose to table is 0 - 30 in (0 - 762 mm) with the head vertical and 5 - 39 in (127 - 991 mm) with it horizontal.

02 How does the 5X-100 differ from the 5X-120?

The 5X-100 is the linear way, high-speed model: 18,000 rpm, 35 hp (26.1 kW) peak, 4,500 lb of axis thrust. The 5X-120 has box ways, a 55 hp (41.0 kW) peak spindle at 15,000 rpm with 90 ft-lb (122 Nm), 10,800 lb of thrust and 50 in (1,270 mm) of Y travel.

03 Which controls run the 5X-100?

Fryer lists full 5-axis Siemens SINUMERIK ONE or Fanuc 31i B5 CNC controls for the 5X series. A 5 axis special function package with rotary tool center point compensation is on the options sheet, as is an adaptive feed function that Fryer says lowers cycle times by up to 40%.

04 How heavy is the 5X-100?

25,500 lb (11,567 kg), with operating dimensions of 240 x 110 x 110 in (6,096 x 2,794 x 2,794 mm). It ships at 120 x 94 x 96 in (3,048 x 2,388 x 2,438 mm) after some disassembly.
