Overview

The Fryer SX-80 is the large model of the SX tilting-head 5-axis series, with 80 x 35 x 34 in (2,032 x 889 x 864 mm) of travel. Two things grow besides the stroke: the table load reaches 10,000 lb (4,536 kg), and the built-in rotary table is 30 in (762 mm) where the SX-60 lists 24 in (610 mm). Fryer's series text names the 30” flush mounted table specifically for the SX-80.

A 10,000 lb table under a tilting head is an unusual combination and defines the work. Large dies, turbine and pump casings, structural fittings and heavy fixtures loaded with several parts can be set on the 30 x 93 in (762 x 2,362 mm) machine table and machined on five sides without a trunnion that would have to lift them. The door opens 81 in (2,057 mm) for loading.

Long parts are the other use. With a table mounted rotary axis and a tailstock, or simply with the head tilted, features at an angle to the length of a rail or beam can be cut along 80 in (2,032 mm) of X. Spindle nose to table is 36 to 2 in (914 - 51 mm), and the spindle centre stands 36 in (914 mm) from the column.

The head and spindle are unchanged from the SX-45 and SX-60: +/- 110° of B travel, 40 hp (29.8 kW) peak, 100 - 18,000 rpm, 85 ft-lb (115 Nm) at 850 rpm, 40 tools. Operating dimensions are 211 x 122 x 114 in (5,359 x 3,099 x 2,896 mm), and the weight is 25,000 lb (11,340 kg).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 10,000 lb (4,536 kg) table load under a 5-axis tilting head
  • 30 in (762 mm) built-in rotary table size, the largest in the SX series
  • 80 in (2,032 mm) of X and 35 in (889 mm) of Y travel
  • 81 in (2,057 mm) door opening
  • Rapids of 1,200 ipm (30.5 m/min) in X and Y despite the size

Limitations

  • Z travel of 34 in (864 mm) is slightly less than the 35 in (889 mm) of the SX-60
  • Spindle power and torque are the same as on the SX-45
  • Operating footprint of 211 x 122 in (5,359 x 3,099 mm)
  • Dual chip auger or conveyor for this length is an option

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What rotary table does the Fryer SX-80 use?

Fryer's series text says the machine is available with a flush mounted 30” rotary table on the SX-80 or a table mounted 12” rotary table, and the specification table lists a built-in rotary table size of 30 in (762 mm). The buyer selects the type and size of rotary table.

02 How much weight can the SX-80 table hold?

10,000 lb (4,536 kg), evenly distributed, on a machine table of 30 x 93 in (762 x 2,362 mm) with 5 T-slots. The SX-60 is rated 7,500 lb (3,402 kg) and the SX-45 5,500 lb (2,495 kg).

03 What are the dimensions and weight of the SX-80?

Operating dimensions are 211 x 122 x 114 in (5,359 x 3,099 x 2,896 mm) and the machine weighs 25,000 lb (11,340 kg). The table top is 35 in (889 mm) above the floor. Power is 80 A at 430-500 VAC, 3 phase, with 220 VAC optional.

04 Which CNC controls are offered on the SX-80?

Full 5 axis contouring with either the Siemens SINUMERIK ONE CNC or the Fanuc 31i B5 CNC, with conversational or G code programming. An adaptive feed option is listed that Fryer says lowers cycle times by up to 40%.
