Overview

The JTEKT FH630SX-i 5-Axis is a horizontal machining center with a tilting spindle head on a 24.8 x 24.8 in (630 x 630 mm) pallet. The fifth axis is in the head, not under the part: JTEKT gives the head a 230° swivel range, while the pallet carries the workpiece as on a four-axis horizontal.

Keeping the tilt out of the table is what preserves the part capacity. The pallet load is 3,306 lb (1,500 kg), maximum workpiece swing is 46.06 in (1,170 mm) and maximum workpiece height is 62.99 in (1,600 mm). A tilting table would have to carry and swing all of that, which is why table-tilt machines of this pallet size take shorter, lighter parts. The price is paid in linear travel, since a swivelling head needs room: X is 31.49 in (800 mm) and Y is 33.46 in (850 mm), with 41.33 in (1,050 mm) in Z.

Two CAT50 spindles are offered. The 8,000 RPM spindle is the high-torque one, described with large-diameter ceramic ball bearings and 107 HP output delivering 802 ft.lbs of torque. The optional 15,000 RPM spindle is given as 74 HP output delivering 387 ft.lbs of torque and is aimed at high-feed work. The specification table itself has no torque row, so these figures come from JTEKT's spindle notes.

On the rotary side JTEKT describes a roller reducer and spur gear design with no timing belt, a Direct Drive Motor system, and a 445 mm diameter cross roller bearing. Rapid feedrate is 2,362 ipm (60 m/min) and tool storage is 60, 120, 240 or 330. The control is the TOYOPUC-Touch HMI running on FANUC 31iMB Plus. Angled bores and compound faces on valve bodies, structural aerospace parts and large housings are the kind of work the layout is meant for.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Tilting spindle head with a 230° swivel range, so the part stays upright on the pallet
  • 3,306 lb (1,500 kg) pallet load and 62.99 in (1,600 mm) workpiece height on a 24.8 x 24.8 in (630 x 630 mm) pallet
  • 8,000 RPM spindle with 107 HP output delivering 802 ft.lbs of torque
  • Optional 15,000 RPM spindle with 74 HP output delivering 387 ft.lbs of torque
  • Roller reducer and spur gear drive without a timing belt, on a 445 mm diameter cross roller bearing
  • 2,362 ipm (60 m/min) rapid feedrate

Limitations

  • X travel is 31.49 in (800 mm) and Y is 33.46 in (850 mm), short beside the 46.06 in (1,170 mm) swing
  • The 15,000 RPM spindle is optional, and it has less than half the torque of the 8,000 RPM spindle in JTEKT's notes
  • No torque or power row in the specification table; the spindle figures appear only in the feature notes
  • The page does not publish positioning accuracy for the linear or rotary axes

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How does the FH630SX-i 5-Axis get its fifth axis?

Through the spindle head. JTEKT describes a tilting spindle head with an expanded 230° swivel range, driven through a roller reducer and spur gear design that does without a timing belt. The workpiece sits on a 24.8 x 24.8 in (630 x 630 mm) pallet, as on a conventional horizontal, so part weight does not load a tilting table.

02 What spindles are available?

Both are CAT50. The 8,000 RPM spindle is described as the high-torque choice, with 107 HP output delivering 802 ft.lbs of torque. The optional 15,000 RPM spindle is given as 74 HP output delivering 387 ft.lbs of torque. JTEKT states a replaceable taper design.

03 What are the travels of the FH630SX-i 5-Axis?

X is 31.49 in (800 mm), Y is 33.46 in (850 mm) and Z is 41.33 in (1,050 mm). Rapid feedrate is 2,362 ipm (60 m/min). The swivel range of the head is 230° according to JTEKT's description; the table lists no rotary speeds.

04 How big and heavy can the part be?

Maximum workpiece swing is 46.06 in (1,170 mm), maximum workpiece height is 62.99 in (1,600 mm) and the pallet carries 3,306 lb (1,500 kg). Fixtures count toward the load. Check tool reach at full tilt against the part, since the X and Y travels are shorter than the swing.

05 How does it relate to the four-axis FH630SX?

It uses the same 630 mm pallet class and the same 60 m/min rapid rate, with a tilting head added. JTEKT's page for the 5-Axis model lists shorter X and Y travels, 31.49 in (800 mm) and 33.46 in (850 mm), which is the room the swivelling head takes up.
