Overview
With a Ø500 mm (Ø19.7 in) table and 1,000 mm (39.4 in) of X travel, the Accuway UM-500 is the largest of the maker's 5-axis vertical machining centers. Y is 650 mm (25.6 in), Z is 550 mm (21.7 in), and the largest workpiece is Ø500 x 300 mm (Ø19.7 x 11.8 in).
Load capacity depends on attitude. The table takes 300 kg (661 lb) when level and 250 kg (551 lb) when tilted upright. Both smaller models in the group hold one figure for both positions, so this is the only one where a tilted setup has to be checked against a lower limit.
The rotary axes are geared for that load, not for speed. C turns at up to 16.6 rpm and the tilting A axis, which travels -120/+30 degrees, at up to 11.1 rpm. For positional 3+2 work that is of little consequence. For parts that swing constantly between faces it adds time compared with the UM-350.
The X stroke is long relative to the table, and the 4/4/7 kW feed motors are a size above those of the smaller 5-axis machines. Rapids are 30 m/min (1,181 in/min) on all three linear axes with roller guideways. The spindle is BT40 direct drive at 12,000 rpm, 15,000 rpm in brackets, on 7.5/11 kW (10.1/14.8 hp). T-slot size is 14 mm. The machine weighs 9,000 kg (19,841 lb) and stands 3.2 m high.
