Overview

Ten tonnes on a rotary table under a 5-axis head: the Emco UMILL 1800 carries 10,000 kg (22,046 lb) on its 1700 x 1400 mm milling table and 6,000 kg (13,228 lb) on the ø 1800 mm table for mill-turn operations. X travel is 1,800 mm (70.9 in) and Z travel 1,250 mm (49.2 in). Emco's brochure and its product page state different Y travels, so that row is left out here and should be confirmed.

The machine shares its concept with the UMILL 1500, a gantry with a rotary table that can also act as a turning spindle at up to 260 rpm. What it adds, besides size, is a third head. The High Power E67 head delivers 46 / 77 kW (S1 / S6) and 600 / 1000 Nm (S1 / S6) at up to 8,000 rpm on an HSK-A100 taper. That is a roughing head for steel and cast iron, and it is listed for this model alone.

The other two heads are the basic E58, with 300 / 372 Nm (S1 / S6) at 12,000 rpm, and the high-speed E61 at 20,000 rpm. A shop therefore chooses between torque, speed and a middle course when the machine is specified, and the choice should follow the dominant material.

The table torque motor is rated 6,800 Nm (5015.7 lb-ft). Feed rate is 60 m/min (2,362 ipm), the magazine holds 88 / 122 / 203 pockets, and the coolant tank is 2500 l (paper band filter) with internal cooling at 20 l/min; 40 bar. Emco points to wide openings in the covering for loading and unloading, which matters when parts arrive by crane.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Milling table rated for 10,000 kg (22,046 lb), turning table for 6,000 kg (13,228 lb)
  • High Power E67 head with 600 / 1000 Nm (S1 / S6)
  • Mill-turn table of ø 1800 mm running at up to 260 rpm
  • Table torque of 6,800 Nm (5015.7 lb-ft)
  • Wide openings in the machine covering for loading and unloading

Limitations

  • Basic rotary table turns at only 10 rpm
  • The E67 head is limited to 8,000 rpm
  • Y travel is stated inconsistently in Emco's own documents
  • Three heads to choose from means the machine has to be specified for its main material

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How heavy a part can the UMILL 1800 take?

The basic NC rotary table is 1700 x 1400 mm and carries 10,000 kg (22,046 lb). The rotary table for mill-turn operations is ø 1800 mm and carries 6,000 kg (13,228 lb). Both have a torque motor with 6,800 Nm (5015.7 lb-ft).

02 What is the High Power head on the UMILL 1800?

The E67 milling head with electrospindle, rated 46 / 77 kW (S1 / S6) and 600 / 1000 Nm (S1 / S6) at 8,000 rpm with an HSK-A100 taper. It has the same 15° undercut as the other heads.

03 What other heads can be fitted?

The basic E58 head, with 45 / 58 kW (S1 / S6), 300 / 372 Nm (S1 / S6) and 12,000 rpm, and the high-speed E61 head with 50 / 63 kW (S1 / S6) and 20,000 rpm on HSK-A63.

04 What are the travels of the UMILL 1800?

X travel is 1,800 mm (70.9 in) and Z travel 1,250 mm (49.2 in), with a feed rate of 60 m/min (2,362 ipm). The Y travel is given differently in the brochure table and on the product page, so ask Emco for the current figure.
