Overview

The Hermle C 650 GEN2 is the updated generation of the largest machine in Hermle's Performance Line, now featuring the Heidenhain TNC7 control and a significant upgrade to 3,000 kg (6,614 lb) table load capacity — up from 2,000 kg on the original C 650. This increase opens the machine to heavier aerospace forgings, large steel mold bases, and energy sector components that previously required stepping up to the High-Performance Line.

X/Y/Z travels remain 1,050 x 900 x 600 mm (41.3 x 35.4 x 23.6 in) with a collision circle of 1,100 mm (43.3 in) and vertical table clearance of 775 mm. The table surface measures 1,250 x 982 mm, providing generous fixturing area for large workpieces up to 900 mm diameter. The A-axis swivels +/- 115 degrees with 360-degree continuous C-axis rotation.

Spindle options include 15,000, 16,000, and 20,000 rpm on HSK-A63 with 29 kW (39 hp) continuous power. Rapid traverse is 35 m/min (1,378 ipm) on all linear axes. The 60-tool standard magazine is expandable to 156 positions for complex multi-operation programs.

The mineral-cast base at approximately 16,500 kg total machine weight provides the mass and vibration damping that Hermle machines are known for. The TNC7 control brings a modern touchscreen interface, improved Dynamic Precision features, and enhanced kinematic calibration. Positioning accuracy is +/- 0.005 mm with repeatability of +/- 0.003 mm.

The C 650 GEN2 is the top of the Performance Line and bridges the gap to the High-Performance Line C 52 U and C 62 U. New pricing runs $680,000-$950,000 depending on configuration.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 3,000 kg table load capacity is a major upgrade from the 2,000 kg original C 650
  • Largest work envelope in the Performance Line at 1,050 x 900 x 600 mm
  • Heidenhain TNC7 control with modern touchscreen and advanced Dynamic Precision
  • 29 kW spindle handles aggressive roughing in titanium and hardened steels
  • 60-tool magazine expandable to 156 covers complex multi-operation programs
  • Mineral-cast base at 16,500 kg provides outstanding vibration damping at scale

Limitations

  • Premium pricing exceeds $680,000 — significant capital investment
  • 16,500 kg machine weight requires substantial foundation planning
  • 35 m/min rapids are moderate for a machine of this size class
  • Hermle North American service network is thinner than DMG Mori or Makino

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What changed from the original C 650 to the GEN2?

The GEN2 increases table load capacity from 2,000 kg to 3,000 kg, ships with the Heidenhain TNC7 control, adds the 16,000 rpm spindle option, and features updated drive technology. The work envelope remains the same.

02 What does a Hermle C 650 GEN2 cost?

New machines run $680,000-$950,000 depending on spindle, tool magazine, and automation options.

03 How does the C 650 GEN2 compare to the C 52 U?

The C 650 GEN2 offers more X-travel (1,050 vs 1,000 mm) and 50% more table load (3,000 vs 2,000 kg), but the C 52 U has more Y-travel (1,100 vs 900 mm) and Z-travel (750 vs 600 mm). The C 52 U also offers higher spindle speed options up to 42,000 rpm.

04 Can the C 650 GEN2 be automated?

Yes. Hermle offers the HS-flex heavy pallet system for automated large-workpiece handling, plus robotic loading integration. The TNC7 control integrates with HACS automation management software.
