Overview

The Haas VF-6/50TR is the heavy-duty 5-axis variant of the VF-6, combining the 50-taper spindle with an integrated dual-axis trunnion on the large-frame 1,626 x 813 x 762 mm (64 x 32 x 30 in) platform. This machine addresses a specific need: shops that require 5-axis access on large parts while maintaining the torque and rigidity of a 50-taper spindle for cutting steel and titanium.

The 29.8 kW (40 hp) geared-head spindle runs at 7,500 RPM with a two-speed gearbox option. The CAT 50 taper handles the large-diameter tools and heavy cuts that steel and titanium 5-axis work demands. This is a fundamentally different proposition from the 40-taper VF-6/40TR: the /50TR can push large face mills and boring bars into hard materials while maintaining 5-axis accessibility.

The trunnion adds a tilting A-axis with +120 to -35 degrees of rotation and a full 360-degree C-axis. The trunnion table diameter is approximately 311 mm (12.25 in) with a 91 kg (200 lb) load capacity. The 1,829 x 660 mm (72 x 26 in) main table with 2,041 kg (4,500 lb) capacity gives room for additional fixtures alongside the trunnion or full-table 3-axis work.

The 40+1 SMTC handles tools up to 406 mm (16 in) from gage line with up to 13.6 kg (30 lb) tool weight. Rapid traverse runs at 15.2 m/min (600 ipm). Machine weight is approximately 11,340 kg (25,000 lb). For aerospace and defense shops machining steel and titanium parts with localized 5-axis features on a large platform, the VF-6/50TR provides a cost-effective alternative to purpose-built heavy-duty 5-axis machines. Specs derived from Haas Automation published data for the VF-6, TR, and 50-taper platforms.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 40 HP CAT 50 spindle with integrated trunnion brings heavy-duty 5-axis capability to large steel and titanium parts
  • 1,626 mm (64 in) X-travel with 5-axis access is far more reach than any Haas UMC model offers
  • 40+1 SMTC with 30 lb tool capacity and 16-inch length handles the large tooling that 50-taper 5-axis work demands
  • Factory-integrated trunnion eliminates alignment issues versus aftermarket rotary solutions on a /50 platform
  • Full 72 x 26-inch table with 4,500 lb capacity still available for heavy 3-axis work alongside the trunnion
  • Dramatically lower cost than purpose-built large 5-axis machines with comparable spindle power

Limitations

  • 91 kg (200 lb) trunnion load limits 5-axis part weight despite the heavy-duty spindle capability
  • 311 mm (12.25 in) trunnion platter restricts 5-axis part size relative to the large machine envelope
  • 7,500 RPM spindle limits high-speed finishing; this machine is built for heavy cutting, not high-speed aluminum
  • 50-taper tooling costs more and limits tooling sharing with 40-taper machines in the shop

Best For

Aerospace shops machining large steel and titanium structural parts with localized 5-axis features Defense manufacturers producing large components requiring both heavy roughing and multi-axis access Mold and die shops needing 5-axis undercut access on large steel mold bases with 50-taper cutting power Heavy equipment shops machining large steel parts with complex angled features Shops that need both large-format 50-taper capability and occasional 5-axis work without buying two machines

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a new Haas VF-6/50TR cost?

Base price starts around $210,000. With through-spindle coolant, probing, gearbox, and common options, expect $245,000-$275,000.

02 How does the VF-6/50TR compare to the VF-6/40TR?

The /50TR upgrades to a 40 HP, 7,500 RPM CAT 50 spindle versus the 30 HP, 8,100 RPM 40-taper on the /40TR. It adds significant machine weight and a 40+1 SMTC with larger tool capacity. Choose the /50TR for steel and titanium; the /40TR for aluminum-dominant mixed work.

03 Can the VF-6/50TR replace a dedicated 5-axis machine?

For production 5-axis work, no. The 91 kg trunnion capacity and 311 mm platter limit 5-axis part size. But for shops that primarily do large-format 3-axis steel work with occasional 5-axis needs, the VF-6/50TR eliminates the need for a second dedicated 5-axis machine.

04 Is simultaneous 5-axis supported?

Yes. The A and C axes support full simultaneous 5-axis contouring with RTCP compensation on the NGC control. Standard 5-axis CAM output from Mastercam, Fusion 360, and NX runs without modification.
