Overview

The Campro NU 170C is the smallest of the NU series 5-axis machining centers: a trunnion-table machine with a Ø170 mm (Ø6.6 in) table and travels of 400 mm (15.7 in) in X, 430 mm (16.9 in) in Y and 480 mm (18.8 in) in Z. The A axis swivels ±100° and the C axis turns through 360°. Campro gives the maximum workpiece as Ø220x 350 mm.

What separates it from its larger siblings is how fast the rotary axes move. The rapid feedrate row reads 200 / 300 rpm for A / C, where the NU 255C lists 22.2 / 33.3 rpm. On a part that is re-oriented many times in a cycle, table positioning stops being the slow step. The trade is capacity. The load row is 50 / 30 kg (110 / 66 lb), printed as a V / H pair, so fixtures have to be light.

The spindle takes BBT-40 tooling, runs to 10,000 rpm and is listed at 7.5 / 11 kW (15 HP). The magazine holds 20 tools. Each can be up to Ø80 mm (Ø3.1 in), or Ø150 mm (Ø5.9 in) with the adjacent pockets empty, 250 mm (9.8 in) long and 7 kg (15 lb). Linear rapids are 30 m/min on all three axes, which Campro says run on heavy duty roller type linear guideways.

It is a compact machine: a 2,240 × 2,900 mm (88 in x 114 in) floor plan, 2,850 mm (112 in) high, 4,000 kg (8,818 lb), with a 20 kVA power capacity. Campro's page names no control and gives no accuracy figures, so both belong on the list of questions for a quotation.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • A / C rapid feedrates of 200 / 300 rpm, against 22.2 / 33.3 rpm on the NU 255C, so re-orienting the part costs little cycle time
  • A axis swivel of ±100° with a 360° C axis, on a table Campro describes as double arm supported
  • BBT-40 spindle at 10,000 rpm, listed at 7.5 / 11 kW (15 HP)
  • Small footprint for a 5-axis machine: 2,240 × 2,900 mm (88 in x 114 in) and 4,000 kg (8,818 lb)
  • Heavy duty roller type linear guideways on X, Y and Z with 30 m/min rapids on each

Limitations

  • Table load is only 50 / 30 kg (110 / 66 lb) (V / H); the NU 255C carries 100 / 70 kg (220 / 154 lb)
  • The Ø170 mm (Ø6.6 in) table and the stated Ø220x 350 mm maximum workpiece restrict it to small components
  • The magazine holds 20 tools and the table shows no larger option, where the NU 255C lists 24 (OPT: 30)
  • Spindle motor of 7.5 / 11 kW (15 HP) is the smallest in the range; the NU 255C is listed at 11 / 15 kW (20 HP)

Best For

Small 5-axis parts that fit the Ø170 mm (Ø6.6 in) table Work with frequent re-orientation, where 200 / 300 rpm rotary rapids shorten the cycle Shops with limited floor space: 2,240 × 2,900 mm (88 in x 114 in) A first 5-axis machine for a shop coming from 3-axis work with light fixtures

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How big a part can the NU 170C machine?

Campro states a maximum workpiece of Ø220x 350 mm on a Ø170 mm (Ø6.6 in) table. Travels are 400 mm (15.7 in) in X, 430 mm (16.9 in) in Y and 480 mm (18.8 in) in Z, and the table load is 50 / 30 kg (110 / 66 lb), which the table gives as a V / H pair.

02 What are the rotary axis ranges and speeds of the NU 170C?

The A axis swivels ±100° and the C axis rotates 360°. The rapid feedrate for A / C is listed as 200 / 300 rpm. That is far faster than the NU 255C, whose table gives 22.2 / 33.3 rpm, although the NU 255C swivels over a wider +30°~-120° range.

03 What spindle and tooling does the NU 170C use?

A BBT-40 spindle running to 10,000 rpm with a 7.5 / 11 kW (15 HP) motor. The tool changer holds 20 tools of up to Ø80 mm (Ø3.1 in) diameter, Ø150 mm (Ø5.9 in) with adjacent pockets empty, 250 mm (9.8 in) length and 7 kg (15 lb) weight.

04 How much space and power does the NU 170C need?

The floor plan is 2,240 × 2,900 mm (88 in x 114 in) and the maximum machine height is 2,850 mm (112 in). The machine weighs 4,000 kg (8,818 lb) and the power capacity is listed as 20 kVA. Campro's table for this model gives no air supply figure.

05 Is the NU 170C suitable for a shop new to 5-axis machining?

Campro presents the integrated trunnion table as the easiest upgrade path for 3-axis workshops, because the approach to part tooling is very similar and operator training time is reduced. The limits are the Ø170 mm (Ø6.6 in) table and the 50 / 30 kg (110 / 66 lb) load, so it suits small parts only.
