Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Fehlmann PICOMAX 550 PRO that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Fehlmann PICOMAX 550 PRO is the higher-specification version of Fehlmann's compact 5-axis machining center. Travels are 550 x 400 x 400 mm (21.7 x 15.7 x 15.7 in), the B axis swivels 180° (+135° / -45°) and the swing circle for 5-axis milling is 500 mm.
Three things separate it from the plain PICOMAX 550. There is a choice of three spindles, all rated at S6 (40% ED): 50 - 12,000 rpm with 9.7 kW (13.0 hp), 50 - 20,000 rpm with 10.5 kW (14.1 hp) and 50 - 30,000 rpm with 13.7 kW (18.4 hp). The magazine is a chain for 60 tools in place of a disk. And the feed rate / rapid feed row rises to 30,000 mm/min (1,181 ipm).
The PRO is also the version Fehlmann describes for automation. An automatic loading door on the right side lets a pallet system or a robot be connected, now or as a retrofit, with the machining area still open from the front. In daily use the layout matters as much as the door: the swivel bridge is never positioned between the operator and the cut, and tools can be added to or removed from the magazine by hand while the machine runs.
Power stays modest across all three spindles, so this is a precision machine for small and medium cutters, not a heavy rougher. Workpiece height is limited to 370 mm, with 80 - 480 mm from table to spindle nose. It weighs 5,250 kg (11,574 lb) and takes 1.95 / 2.55 / 2.65 m of width, depth and height. The control is a Heidenhain TNC7 with a 19” touch screen.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Three spindle versions: 50 - 12,000 rpm, 50 - 20,000 rpm or 50 - 30,000 rpm
- Chain magazine for 60 tools, loadable from the front during machining
- Automatic loading door on the right side for pallet handling or robot loading
- Feed rate / rapid feed row up to 30,000 mm/min (1,181 ipm)
- Direct torque drives on the rotary axes, without mechanical gearboxes
- Fits in 1.95 m of width and 2.55 m of depth
Limitations
- The most powerful spindle is 13.7 kW (18.4 hp), and it is the 30,000 rpm one
- The 12,000 rpm spindle has 9.7 kW (13.0 hp), which limits roughing in steel
- Workpiece height stops at 370 mm and the swing circle at 500 mm
- Zero-point clamping, through-spindle high-pressure coolant and measuring systems are options

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Fehlmann equips it with spindles for 12,000, 20,000 or 30,000 rpm. The specification rates them at S6 (40% ED) with 9.7 kW (13.0 hp), 10.5 kW (14.1 hp) and 13.7 kW (18.4 hp) in that order, each starting at 50 rpm. No torque or taper is stated in the table.
02
Through an automatic loading door on the right-hand side, to which pallet handling systems or robotic loading solutions can be connected, also as a later retrofit. Control and monitoring run either via the integrated pallet management system or the FEHLMANN MCM (Milling Center Manager). The machining area stays freely accessible from the front for setup.
03
The PICOMAX 550 lists a single 12,000 rpm spindle, a disk magazine for 30 tools, a feed rate / rapid feed row up to 24,000 mm/min and a weight of 5,050 kg. The PRO offers three spindles up to 30,000 rpm, a chain magazine for 60 tools and 30,000 mm/min. Travels, swing circle, control and footprint are the same.
04
In Fehlmann's description, torque drives transmit power directly and backlash-free, without mechanical gearboxes or additional transmission elements. The rotary axes here are cooled torque drives, with B covering 180° (+135° / -45°) and C 0° - 360°. The practical effect claimed is smooth motion in simultaneous 5-axis cuts and fewer wearing parts.
05
A Heidenhain TNC7 with a 19” touch screen. Fehlmann says the control supports positioning operations and simultaneous 5-axis machining and offers direct CAM connectivity. Tool handling is tied in as well: the tool management lets tools be added, replaced or removed by hand at any time during machining.
