Overview

The MCM JET FIVE is a 5-axis milling machine with a horizontal spindle on a bi-rotary head, built to order for large components. MCM does not publish one set of travels for it. X is anywhere from 3,000 to 12,000 mm (from 118.1 to 472.4 in), Y from 1,500 to 2,500 mm (from 59.0 to 98.4 in) and Z from 600 to 3,000 mm (from 23.6 to 118.1 in).

Both rotary axes are in the head: ±110 degrees on A and ±360 degrees on C. The workpiece stays still on its pallet, which is what makes pallets of 3,000 x 2,000 mm (118.1 x 78.7 in) or 6,000 x 2,000 mm (236.2 x 78.7 in) workable. The B-axis row of the table is empty, so there is no rotary table to plan around.

MCM names the two ends of the application range itself: lightweight materials such as aluminium and magnesium alloys, and difficult-to-machine ones such as titanium, Inconel and special alloys. The rapid feed row reflects that spread. It gives 40 / 70 m/min (1,574.8 / 2,755.9 ipm), with the higher figure tied to linear motors. A long-bed aluminium machine and a titanium machine will be specified very differently, and MCM says each JET FIVE is designed case by case around the customer's needs.

Tapers are HSK or ISO, and the magazine row reads "up to 199 (450)". MCM states that all JET FIVE models can be included in multi-pallet systems or FMS that it designs and assembles itself. It calls the line the top of its range in technology and working space.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • X stroke configurable from 3,000 to 12,000 mm (from 118.1 to 472.4 in)
  • Bi-rotary head with ±110 degrees on A and ±360 degrees on C, so large workpieces never have to move for 5-axis access
  • Rapid feed of up to 70 m/min (2,755.9 ipm) with linear motors
  • Pallets of 3,000 x 2,000 mm (118.1 x 78.7 in) or 6,000 x 2,000 mm (236.2 x 78.7 in)
  • Magazine capacity is printed as "up to 199 (450)" tools
  • MCM states the line machines both aluminium and magnesium alloys and titanium, Inconel and special alloys

Limitations

  • No fixed specification: travels are ranges and every machine is engineered to order, so figures must come from a project quotation
  • Listed for milling only; there is no turning or grinding version in the table
  • No rotary table is listed, so all angular access depends on the head's ±110 degree A range
  • The 70 m/min (2,755.9 ipm) rapid feed applies to linear motors; the other figure listed is 40 m/min (1,574.8 ipm)

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What are the axis travels of the JET FIVE?

MCM gives ranges, not fixed values: X from 3,000 to 12,000 mm (from 118.1 to 472.4 in), Y from 1,500 to 2,500 mm (from 59.0 to 98.4 in) and Z from 600 to 3,000 mm (from 23.6 to 118.1 in). The strokes are chosen per project, and MCM calls the X-axis stroke customizable.

02 What kind of 5-axis head does the JET FIVE have?

A bi-rotary head. The table lists its angles as ±110 on the A axis and ±360 on the C axis, in degrees. Both rotary axes are therefore in the spindle head, and the table shows no B-axis rotary table for this machine.

03 How fast does the JET FIVE move?

The X/Y/Z rapid feed row reads 40 / 70 m/min (1,574.8 / 2,755.9 ipm), with "Linear Motors" noted against the higher figure. So the drive technology is part of the configuration, and the rapid rate follows from it.

04 What materials is the JET FIVE meant for?

MCM states that it machines both lightweight materials, naming aluminium and magnesium alloys, and difficult-to-machine materials, naming titanium, Inconel and special alloys. It lists aerospace, oil and gas, renewable energy, marine engineering and general industrial applications as its sectors.

05 Can the JET FIVE work in an automated line?

Yes. MCM says all JET FIVE models can be included in flexible manufacturing systems or multi-pallet solutions that MCM designs and assembles. The table lists pallets of 3,000 x 2,000 mm (118.1 x 78.7 in) and 6,000 x 2,000 mm (236.2 x 78.7 in).
