Overview

The KRC FUSION VI is a large-format gantry machining center built in configurable sizes: the base axis (X, U) is offered with 9 to 36 m (354 to 1,417 in) of stroke and the bridge axis (Y1, Y2) with 3 to 6.5 m (118 to 256 in). A moveable bridge carries dual vertical masts on parallel rails above the work area.

It is a multi-process machine aimed at composite aerostructures. The primary mast is configured for five-axis milling, drilling, routing and countersinking. The secondary mast carries a six-axis abrasive waterjet head for trimming. KRC lists trimming, drilling, routing, surface milling, marking and inspection as work done in one setup, and names the CMC-55, a composite machining center with a 5.5 m crossbridge, as the latest model of the series.

The published gantry figures are accuracy and speed per axis. Linear accuracy is 0.10 mm (0.004 in) TIR on the base axis, 0.08 mm (0.003 in) TIR on the cross-bridge and 0.05 mm (0.002 in) TIR on the vertical axis, with repeatability of ± 0.05 mm (0.002 in), ± 0.038 mm (0.0015 in) and ± 0.025 mm (0.001 in) in the same order. Rapids are 40 m/min (1,575 ipm), 25 m/min (984 ipm) and 15 m/min (591 ipm), and maximum contour speed is 10 m/min (394 ipm) on every linear axis.

The milling head rotates ± 300° in C and ± 100° in B at up to 300°/sec, with rotary positioning accuracy of ± 7.5 arc sec (0.002°). The waterjet head is listed with ± 270° in C, ± 90° in B and ± 180° in A. KRC publishes no spindle power or speed for the series and says additional heads are available, so the spindle is settled in the quotation. Controls are Fanuc or Siemens.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Base axis stroke from 9 to 36 m (354 to 1,417 in) and bridge stroke from 3 to 6.5 m (118 to 256 in), configured to the part
  • Two masts on one bridge: five-axis milling on the primary, six-axis abrasive waterjet on the secondary
  • Rapid traverse of 40 m/min (1,575 ipm) on the base axis
  • Milling head with ± 300° of C and ± 100° of B travel at up to 300°/sec
  • Integrated metrology package for part alignment, inspection, spring back compensation and tool path correction
  • Fanuc or Siemens controls

Limitations

  • No spindle power, speed or taper is published; KRC notes only that additional heads are available
  • Maximum contour speed is 10 m/min (394 ipm) on every linear axis, a quarter of the 40 m/min (1,575 ipm) base-axis rapid
  • Linear accuracy of 0.10 mm (0.004 in) TIR on the base axis suits trim and drill work on large panels more than tight-tolerance metal cutting
  • Every machine is configured to order, so there is no fixed table size, load or weight to plan from

Best For

Trimming and drilling large composite aerostructures in one setup Parts that need both routing and abrasive waterjet trimming Long panels and skins that call for 9 to 36 m (354 to 1,417 in) of base travel Cells that inspect and correct tool paths on the machine with the metrology package

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How large can a KRC FUSION VI be built?

KRC lists the base axis (X, U) with 9 to 36 m (354 to 1,417 in) of stroke and the bridge axis (Y1, Y2) with 3 to 6.5 m (118 to 256 in). The series is modular, and KRC names the CMC-55, with a 5.5 m crossbridge, as its latest model. The vertical stroke printed on the page has metric and inch values that disagree, so confirm it with KRC.

02 What processes does the FUSION VI combine?

KRC describes trimming, drilling, routing, surface milling, marking and inspection in one setup. The primary vertical mast is configured for five-axis milling, precision drilling, routing and countersinking, and the secondary mast carries a six-axis abrasive waterjet for trimming. Quick-change kinematic cutting heads are available.

03 How accurate is the FUSION VI gantry?

Linear accuracy is listed as 0.10 mm (0.004 in) TIR on the base axis, 0.08 mm (0.003 in) TIR on the cross-bridge axis and 0.05 mm (0.002 in) TIR on the vertical axis. Linear repeatability is ± 0.05 mm (0.002 in), ± 0.038 mm (0.0015 in) and ± 0.025 mm (0.001 in) on the same three axes.

04 What are the rotary axis ranges of the FUSION VI heads?

The milling head has ± 300° of C-axis and ± 100° of B-axis travel, with a rotation speed of 300°/sec and rotary positioning repeatability of ± 3.6 arc sec (0.001°). The abrasive waterjet head is listed with ± 270° in C, ± 90° in B and ± 180° in A.

05 Which controls are offered on the FUSION VI?

KRC says all models in the FUSION VI series can be customized with either Fanuc or Siemens controls, together with flexible or dedicated tooling and fixtures, multiple machine bed options and automation. Each system is configured as a turn-key installation for the customer process.
