Overview
The Hermle G 500 is a 5-axis gantry machining center designed for large-format workpieces that exceed the capacity of Hermle C-series trunnion-table platforms. Unlike the C-series, which achieves 5-axis motion by tilting the workpiece, the G 500 keeps the workpiece stationary on a fixed table and delivers A/B-axis articulation through a swiveling milling head on a gantry structure. This approach accommodates extremely heavy and large workpieces without load-transfer complications.
The G 500 provides X/Y/Z travels of 2,000 mm x 1,500 mm x 1,000 mm with a fixed table rated for 5,000 kg. Applications include large aerospace structural panels, automotive body-die mold bases, energy sector housings, and large defense structures. The articulating head delivers plus or minus 120 degrees of A-axis swivel and continuous C-axis rotation for full 5-axis simultaneous interpolation across the entire working volume.
Hermle uses the same mineral-cast base technology on the G 500 as across the C-series, providing exceptional vibration damping and superior surface finish quality at large scale. The gantry structure is thermally compensated to maintain positional accuracy across extended production runs. Standard spindle is 18,000 rpm HSK-A63; a 24,000 rpm option suits high-speed aluminum applications.
Automation on the G 500 typically uses linear transfer systems and dedicated fixturing rather than the pallet-handling systems on C-series machines. The Heidenhain TNC 640 or Siemens 840D sl control provides the same programming environment as the rest of the Hermle lineup, reducing cross-training requirements in mixed-machine shops.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Fixed-table gantry supports 5,000 kg workpieces without inclined table load complications
- 2,000x1,500x1,000 mm envelope handles large aerospace panels, mold bases, and energy housings
- Articulating swivel head delivers full simultaneous 5-axis capability across the entire work volume
- Mineral-cast base ensures Hermle-grade surface finish quality at large scale
- Same Heidenhain/Siemens control as C-series reduces programmer cross-training requirements
Limitations
- Very high investment ($1.5M+) applicable only to large-part aerospace, energy, or die/mold operations
- Fixed-table architecture limits automation flexibility compared to pallet-based C-series machines
- Significant floor space, crane access, and foundation engineering required for installation

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The G 500 uses a fixed table and a swiveling milling head on a gantry, whereas C-series machines achieve 5-axis motion through a swiveling trunnion table. The G 500 handles workpieces up to 5,000 kg that cannot be tilted safely on a trunnion table, and part sizes that exceed the C-series envelope.
02
Primary users include aerospace manufacturers machining large structural panels and frames, automotive die and mold shops, energy sector manufacturers producing large turbine and generator housings, and defense contractors requiring 5-axis precision on oversized structures.
03
The G 500 is offered with 18,000 rpm and 24,000 rpm spindle options, both HSK-A63 at 37 kW continuous. The 24,000 rpm variant suits high-speed aluminum structural machining; 18,000 rpm handles titanium and steel applications.
04
Yes. The articulating milling head provides plus or minus 120 degrees of A-axis swivel and continuous 360-degree C-axis rotation, enabling full simultaneous 5-axis interpolation across the entire 2,000x1,500 mm table area.
05
As a large-format specialty machine, the G 500 typically requires 12-18 months from order to delivery. Installation and commissioning add further time. Early engagement with Hermle on foundation requirements and site preparation is strongly recommended.
