Overview

The Haas UMC-1000SS-P is a five-axis machining center built around a long table instead of a round platter. A 40 × 15 in (1,016 × 381 mm) table turns a full 360° on the A axis and tilts from 45° to -45° on B. Linear travels are 40 × 25 × 25 in (1,016 × 635 × 635 mm), and as the SS model it has a 12,000 rpm spindle with 1,200 ipm (30.5 m/min) rapids.

The layout suits parts that are long and slender. The table is as long as the X travel, so a part can be supported along its whole length, but it has to rotate inside an A-axis part swing of 11.9 in (302 mm) and weigh no more than 350 lb (159 kg) with its fixture. The UMC-1000SS, on the same travels, takes 1,000 lb (454 kg) on a 25 in (635 mm) platter and tilts from 120° to -35°. Choosing the P gives up that load and tilt range in exchange for length.

The two rotary axes are not equally strong. B has 2,240 ft-lbf (3,037 N·m) of torque and a 2,000 ft-lbf (2,712 N·m) brake. A has 210 ft-lbf (285 N·m) and a 200 ft-lbf (271 N·m) brake, about a tenth of the B figures, so a heavy cut taken well away from the A centreline deserves a check before the job is quoted. Both axes move at 100°/sec, and Haas names cycloidal rotary drives in its feature list for this model.

The spindle is the 30 hp (22.4 kW) inline direct-drive unit with 90 ft-lbf (122 N·m) at 2,000 rpm. The UMC-1000-P has that same rating with an 8,100 rpm top speed, a 650 ipm (16.5 m/min) cutting feedrate and 900 ipm (22.9 m/min) rapids, so the SS buys speed, not torque. Its 30+1 side-mount changer swaps tools in 1.8 s. Haas lists a starting price of US$311,995, and the machine ships at 17,000 lb (7,711 kg).
