Price estimate: uncertain

We have no price for the AWEA MCP-18040 that we can cite and no estimate we can stand behind, so this page shows no number rather than a guess. A quote from AWEA or an authorised dealer is the reliable figure.

What moves the final price

  • Spindle, control and probing options
  • Tool changer capacity and tooling package
  • Automation — pallet changers, bar feeders, robot cells
  • Freight, rigging, installation and training
  • Region, dealer and time of year

Overview

Height is what separates the AWEA MCP-18040 from a long plate mill. Beneath the bridge, the spindle nose stands 800 ~ 2,200 mm (31.5 ~ 86.6 in) above the table top and the ram travels 1,400 mm (55.1 in) in Z. Order the 1,600 mm Z option and the lower limit drops to 600 mm. Under that sits a table 18,000 x 2,800 mm (708.7 x 110.2 in), served by 18,000 mm (708.7 in) of X travel and 4,400 mm (173.2 in) of Y.

A tall Z stroke is only useful if the ram stays stiff at the bottom of it. AWEA's answer is a U-shaped saddle that fully surrounds the headstock, with reinforced front structures, four linear guide ways and ten sliding blocks. The maker says this reduces distortion even when the headstock is fully extended. That is the condition a deep pocket or the foot of a tall weldment puts the machine in.

Side faces are reached with attachment heads, changed automatically. Remember that a head hangs below the spindle nose and uses part of the daylight, so check the head dimensions against the tallest part before fixing the Z option.

Tooling is BBT50, up to 400 mm (15.7 in) long and 20 kg (44 lb). The magazine is 40T, or 60T on request. All axes rapid at 10 m/min (394 ipm).

This is the second longest of the 4,400 mm machines. Only the MCP-20040 adds more X, with 20,000 mm (787.4 in).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Up to 2,200 mm (86.6 in) between spindle nose and table top
  • Optional 1,600 mm Z travel in place of the standard 1,400 mm (55.1 in)
  • Headstock fully surrounded by a U-shaped saddle with four linear guide ways and ten sliding blocks
  • 18,000 mm (708.7 in) of X over a stationary table
  • 60T magazine available in place of the standard 40T

Limitations

  • Minimum nose height of 800 mm (31.5 in) as standard, 600 mm with the Z option: flat work needs build-up
  • Tool length limit of 400 mm (15.7 in) restricts how far a tool can reach down to low features
  • Attachment head dimensions are not in the specification table
  • No weight figure for a machine with an 18,000 mm bed, and no table load
06

Best For

Tall weldments and castings on a long bed Deep features machined with the ram extended Side-face machining with automatically changed heads Parts up to 18,000 mm long and 2,800 mm (110.2 in) wide

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How tall a part fits under the MCP-18040 spindle?

With the Z-axis fully raised the spindle nose is 2,200 mm (86.6 in) above the table top; fully lowered it is 800 mm (31.5 in) with the standard 1,400 mm (55.1 in) Z travel. The usable part height is less than 2,200 mm once tool length, and any attachment head, are subtracted. Tools can be up to 400 mm (15.7 in) long.

02 When is the 1,600 mm Z option worth having?

When the same machine has to cut both tall and low parts. The option extends the nose range to 600 ~ 2,200 mm from the standard 800 ~ 2,200 mm (31.5 ~ 86.6 in), so the gain is entirely at the bottom of the stroke. The top position stays the same.

03 How is the MCP-18040 headstock supported?

It sits in a U-shaped saddle with reinforced front structures that fully surrounds it, guided by four linear guide ways with ten sliding blocks. AWEA states that the design reduces distortion and keeps accuracy when the headstock is fully extended. No stiffness or accuracy value is given in the specification table for this model.

04 What is the next size up or down from the MCP-18040?

The MCP-16040 has 16,000 mm (629.9 in) of X and the MCP-20040 has 20,000 mm (787.4 in). Y travel, Z travel, spindle, magazine, tanks and power requirement are identical on all three. For more width at the same length, the MCP-18050 has 5,400 mm (212.6 in) of Y and the MCP-18060 has 6,400 mm (252.0 in).
