Overview
The Fryer 5X-60 is a 5-axis machining center in which the spindle does the tilting and rotating and the part stays flat on the table. Travels are 60 x 30 x 35 in (1,524 x 762 x 889 mm) on linear ways, and the head, which Fryer identifies as a Kessler 2-axis unit, gives an A travel of +/- 95° and a C travel of +/- 200°.
Putting both rotary axes in the head suits parts that are awkward to swing on a trunnion: long, heavy or fixture-bound workpieces. The table is 24 x 67 in (610 x 1,702 mm) and carries 5,000 lb (2,268 kg) regardless of what the head is doing. What the arrangement gives up is reach. The spindle nose sits 11 in (279 mm) from the centre of rotation, so every tilt sweeps the tool through an arc that uses up X, Y and Z travel, and the usable 5-axis envelope is smaller than the linear travels suggest.
The spindle is a high-speed unit: 200 - 18,000 rpm, HSK-63A, 35 hp (26.1 kW) peak with 40 ft-lb (54 Nm) at 1,000 rpm. It is the faster and lighter of the two spindles in the series; the 5X-120 and 5X-160 carry 55 hp (41.0 kW) at 15,000 rpm. Rapids are 1,200 ipm (30.5 m/min), the rotary axes position to 5 seconds of arc, and Fryer lists Heidenhain glass scales among the series features.
A 40-station arm type changer is standard. The control is a full 5-axis Siemens SINUMERIK ONE or Fanuc 31i B5. Supply is 125 A at 380-500 VAC, and the machine weighs 20,000 lb (9,072 kg).

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Two-axis head: A travel of +/- 95° and C travel of +/- 200°, with the part fixed on the table
- 18,000 rpm HSK-63A spindle, 35 hp (26.1 kW) peak
- 1,200 ipm (30.5 m/min) rapids on linear ways
- Rotary positioning accuracy of 5 seconds of arc
- 40-station tool changer as standard, 60 tools optional
Limitations
- Spindle torque is 40 ft-lb (54 Nm), far below the 90 ft-lb (122 Nm) of the 5X-120
- The 11 in (279 mm) from spindle nose to centre of rotation reduces usable travel when the head tilts
- Requires 125 A at 380-500 VAC
- Tools are limited to 3.0 in (76 mm) in diameter with the magazine full and 15.0 lb

Frequently Asked Questions
01
With a 2-axis articulating spindle head rather than a tilting table. Fryer describes a Kessler tilting/rotary head with 360° of rotation and 200° of spindle tilt; its specification table lists A travel of +/- 95° and C travel of +/- 200°. The part stays on a fixed-orientation 24 x 67 in (610 x 1,702 mm) table.
02
An HSK-63A spindle running 200 - 18,000 rpm with 35 hp (26.1 kW) peak and 40 ft-lb (54 Nm) at 1,000 rpm. The spindle nose is 11 in (279 mm) from the centre of rotation. A lighter carbon fiber duty articulating head is listed as an option in place of the Kessler head.
03
Linear positioning accuracy is +/- 0.0002 in (0.0051 mm) with repeatability of +/- 0.0001 in (0.0025 mm). For the A and C axes the table gives 5 seconds of arc accuracy and 3 seconds of arc repeatability. Fryer lists high power torque motors and Heidenhain glass scales for the series.
04
With the spindle vertical, spindle nose to table is 0 - 30 in (0 - 762 mm). With the spindle horizontal it is 5 - 40 in (127 - 1,016 mm). The spindle centre is 30 in (762 mm) from the column and the door opens 62 in (1,575 mm).
