Overview

The Hurco VMX42SRTi is Hurco's mid-size swivel-head rotary table 5-axis machine, designed for shops that need to put heavy parts under 5-axis toolpaths. The SRT (Swivel-head Rotary Table) configuration tilts the spindle head through the B-axis while a C-axis rotary table provides workpiece rotation. This means the part sits on a large, rigid table instead of being tilted on a trunnion — a fundamental advantage when your parts weigh hundreds of kilograms.

Travels are 1,067 x 610 x 610 mm (42 x 24 x 24 in). Note the Z-axis: 610 mm (24 in) versus 520 mm (20.5 in) on the trunnion VMX42Ui. The extra 90 mm of Z travel comes from the swivel-head design and gives you room for tall parts, long tools, and deep cavity access. The fixed table is 1,270 x 610 mm (50 x 24 in) rated for 1,360 kg (3,000 lb), with an integrated 599 mm (23.6 in) rotary table rated for 500 kg (1,100 lb).

The B-axis swivels +/-92 degrees and the C-axis rotates 360 degrees. B-axis rapid hits 50 RPM and C-axis runs at 100 RPM — significantly faster than trunnion model rotary speeds, reducing repositioning time during indexed operations.

The spindle runs 12,000 RPM through a CAT 40 / Big Plus taper, delivering 30 kW (40 hp) of peak power with 98.9 Nm (72.8 ft-lbs) of torque at 2,900 RPM. That's more horsepower than any trunnion model in the VMX42 family, matched to the machine's ability to handle bigger, heavier cuts on larger workpieces.

The 40-tool ATC carries standard tooling with 76 mm max diameter and 249 mm max length. Rapids hit 38 m/min (1,496 ipm) on X/Y and 32 m/min (1,260 ipm) on Z. At 8,400 kg (18,520 lb), this machine requires a solid foundation. Floor space is 4,954 x 3,772 mm (195 x 149 in) and power draw is 70 KVA.

New pricing runs $250,000-$330,000. The VMX42SRTi competes with the DMG MORI DMU 65 monoBlock and Mazak VARIAXIS C-600 in the mid-size swivel-head 5-axis segment.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 1,360 kg (3,000 lb) fixed table load handles heavy steel parts that no trunnion 5-axis in this class can support
  • 30 kW (40 hp) spindle is the most powerful in the VMX42 family, driving face mills through steel with authority
  • 610 mm Z-axis travel provides extra clearance for deep cavities, tall parts, and long-reach tooling
  • 100 RPM C-axis rapid repositioning cuts cycle time by 4x compared to trunnion rotary speeds
  • 50 x 24 inch fixed table accommodates large workpieces and multiple-part fixturing setups
  • WinMax conversational 5-axis programming is standard, maintaining Hurco's programming speed advantage

Limitations

  • 70 KVA power requirement is substantial and may need dedicated electrical service in older facilities
  • 98.9 Nm torque peak at 2,900 RPM means less low-end torque than trunnion models for interrupted cuts in steel
  • 4,954 x 3,772 mm footprint requires significant floor space — substantially larger than trunnion variants
  • Swivel-head mechanism is mechanically more complex than trunnion, with higher long-term maintenance costs
  • 249 mm max tool length is shorter than the trunnion Ui's 300 mm, limiting deep-reach tooling options

Best For

Shops machining heavy steel and cast iron parts requiring 5-axis access that exceed trunnion weight limits Aerospace manufacturers producing large structural components, frames, and brackets in aluminum and steel Die and mold shops needing 5-axis swivel-head access to deep cavities from multiple angles Energy sector manufacturers machining large valve bodies, manifolds, and turbine components Contract manufacturers handling oversized parts that need multi-sided machining in a single setup Shops transitioning from 3-axis VMCs to 5-axis that need to maintain high table load capacity

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a Hurco VMX42SRTi cost?

New pricing runs $250,000-$330,000 depending on options. Through-spindle coolant, probing, chip conveyor, and coolant chiller are recommended additions. Used machines from 2016-2021 sell for $140,000-$220,000 depending on hours, condition, and options.

02 Should I get the SRTi or the trunnion Ui?

If your parts weigh more than 250 kg with fixturing, or are too large for a 15.7-inch trunnion table, the SRTi is the clear choice. If your parts are smaller and lighter, the trunnion Ui provides better indexing accuracy and costs $70-90K less. The SRTi also has 90 mm more Z travel for deep-reach work.

03 How does the swivel head affect accuracy compared to trunnion?

Both configurations achieve similar accuracy specs (±5 arc-second positioning). The key difference is workpiece orientation — on a trunnion, the part tilts with the table, which can affect coolant delivery and chip evacuation on steep-angle cuts. The SRT keeps the part flat while the spindle tilts, generally providing better chip management.

04 Can I use the fixed table area outside the rotary table?

Yes. The 1,270 x 610 mm fixed table can be used as a standard 3-axis work surface with 1,360 kg capacity. You can fixture parts on the flat table area surrounding the rotary, or remove the rotary table entirely for large 3-axis work. This dual-purpose capability makes the SRTi versatile.

05 What's the B-axis maintenance schedule?

The swivel-head B-axis is the most mechanically complex component. Hurco recommends annual inspection of the clamping mechanism, lubrication system checks every 1,000 hours, and periodic backlash verification. Plan on $2,000-$5,000 per year in B-axis-specific maintenance costs above what a trunnion machine requires.
