Overview

The Hedelius ACURA 50 is the smallest of the maker's 5-axis machining centres with a rotating/swivelling table: 500 mm (19.7 in) of X, 550 mm (21.7 in) of Z, and a Y travel listed as 550 / 370 mm for the horizontal and vertical positions. The table measures Ø 500 x 430 mm, swivels from +30° to -115° and takes 300 kg (661 lb). Hedelius gives an interference circle of Ø 550 mm, and that is the figure to check a fixture against, because it applies once the table tilts.

Four spindles appear in the data sheet. Two take SK40 or BT40 tooling at 14,000 rpm, one with 117 Nm and 22 kW, the other with 183 Nm and 29 kW. With HSK A63 the choice is 18,000 rpm at 136 Nm and 35 kW, or 14,000 rpm at 117 Nm and 22 kW. The product page lists a fifth, an HSK A63 spindle at 24,000 rpm with 123 Nm and 30 kW. For the 29 kW spindle Hedelius quotes 500 cm3/min of milling in E335/St60-2 steel, so this is a machine for cutting steel as well as finishing it.

The table is carried in bearings on both sides and the C axis has a backlash-free direct drive. It turns at 0 – 50 min-1 and a swivel takes 1.2 s. Swivel torque is 1,450 Nm against a clamping figure of 2,200 Nm. One point is easy to miss: Hedelius lists 5-axis simultaneous milling as optional, so a base machine positions the table and cuts with three axes.

Tooling starts at 55 places, and the MAGNUM magazine adds 25 more that can be loaded from the front. Tools are limited to 300 mm in length and 5 kg, with ca. 9 s chip to chip. The machine weighs 5,500 kg (12,125 lb) and its chip conveyor pulls out to the front on rollers, which matters where the ACURA 50 has to stand against a wall.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Rotating/swivelling table held in bearings on both sides, with a backlash-free direct drive in the C axis
  • Spindle choice runs from 14,000 rpm with 183 Nm and 29 kW in SK40 / BT40 to 18,000 rpm with 35 kW in HSK A63
  • Table swivels from +30° to -115° in 1.2 s per swivel, with 1,450 Nm of swivel torque
  • 55 tools as standard, and the MAGNUM magazine adds 25 more that are loaded from the front
  • Positioning accuracy of A=6 µm to ISO 230-2 on X, Y and Z, and rapid feeds of 40 m/min on all three

Limitations

  • The table carries 300 kg (661 lb) and the interference circle is Ø 550 mm, so fixtures have to stay small
  • 5-axis simultaneous milling is listed as optional, not as part of the base machine
  • Tools are limited to 300 mm in length and 5 kg; diameters of 100 or 125 mm need free adjoining places, which is an option
  • X travel is 500 mm (19.7 in), which rules out longer parts even when they are light

Best For

Small 5-sided parts within a Ø 550 mm interference circle and 300 kg Steel and cast iron work with the 183 Nm, 29 kW SK40 / BT40 spindle Shops with little floor space that need a front-loaded tool magazine Single parts and small batches machined from several sides in one clamping

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What size of workpiece fits the ACURA 50?

The table is Ø 500 x 430 mm and carries up to 300 kg (661 lb). Hedelius gives an interference circle of Ø 550 mm. Travels are 500 mm in X and 550 mm in Z, with Y listed as 550 / 370 mm for the horizontal and vertical positions, so the usable height depends on how the table is tilted.

02 Which spindles can the ACURA 50 be ordered with?

The data sheet lists four: SK40 / BT40 at 14,000 rpm with 117 Nm and 22 kW, SK40 / BT40 at 14,000 rpm with 183 Nm and 29 kW, HSK A63 at 18,000 rpm with 136 Nm and 35 kW, and HSK A63 at 14,000 rpm with 117 Nm and 22 kW. The product page also shows an HSK A63 spindle at 24,000 rpm with 123 Nm and 30 kW.

03 Is the ACURA 50 a full simultaneous 5-axis machine?

It has five axes, with the table swivelling from +30° to -115° and rotating at 0 – 50 min-1 on a direct-drive C axis. Hedelius lists 5-axis simultaneous milling as optional, so confirm that the option is on the quotation if the work needs all five axes moving in the cut.

04 How many tools does the ACURA 50 hold?

55 tools as standard. The MAGNUM tool magazine adds 25, and the data sheet gives theoretical capacities of 55 / 80 / 125 / 170 / 235 / 319 with the standby cabinet magazines. A tool can be up to 75 mm in diameter with every place full, 300 mm long and 5 kg.

05 What does the ACURA 50 weigh and how is it moved?

The standard weight is 5,500 kg (12,125 lb). Hedelius gives a delivery/transport height of 2,400 / 2,520 mm and a width of 2,350 / 2,670 mm, so check door openings against both pairs of figures before delivery.
