Overview
The Mazak VARIAXIS i-1050 5X is the largest model in the VARIAXIS i-Series vertical 5-axis machining center lineup, designed for shops that need maximum table size, workpiece weight capacity, and material removal capability in a trunnion-style 5-axis machine. With a 1,050 mm diameter rotary table, 1,500 kg workpiece capacity, and a powerful CAT 50 spindle, the i-1050 5X addresses the demands of large aerospace structural work, heavy energy components, and oversized mold and die machining.
Axis travels step up significantly from the i-800: X-axis runs 900 mm, Y-axis 1,400 mm, and Z-axis 700 mm. These travels allow larger parts to be fully machined in a single setup, and the 1,400 mm Y-axis is one of the longest available on any production 5-axis VMC. The trunnion table at 1,050 mm diameter accepts workpieces up to 1,400 mm in diameter and 500 mm in height — covering large bulkheads, wing ribs, engine mounts, and structural frames that would otherwise require multiple setups or a larger HMC.
The CAT 50 spindle delivers 45 kW (60 hp) and 500 Nm of torque with an 8,000 RPM maximum speed. The higher power rating compared to the i-800 reflects the i-1050's heavier cutting targets in thick titanium and steel. Roller gear cam drives on A-axis (-120 to +30 degrees) and C-axis (360-degree continuous) deliver backlash-free positioning. Rapid traverse is 40 m/min.
MAZATROL SmoothAi manages all five simultaneous axes with AI vibration detection and advanced thermal compensation. Machine weight reaches 38,000 kg, providing substantial thermal mass for vibration control during aggressive cutting. The i-1050 5X is Mazak's answer to the DMG Mori DMU 125 FD, Okuma MU-10000H, and Hermle C 62.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 1,050 mm table diameter and 1,500 kg capacity enable 5-axis machining of large aerospace structures that exceed the envelope of most vertical 5-axis machines
- 1,400 mm Y-axis travel is among the longest available on any production trunnion-style 5-axis VMC, covering elongated aerospace wing panels and structural frames
- 45 kW / 500 Nm CAT 50 spindle delivers maximum cutting power for heavy titanium and steel roughing on large structural components
- 38,000 kg machine weight provides exceptional vibration damping for deep cuts in difficult materials
- Roller gear cam drives on both rotary axes maintain positioning accuracy over millions of cycles without the wear associated with worm gear drives
- 500 mm maximum workpiece height is the most generous in the VARIAXIS series, accommodating tall components that cannot be machined on the i-800
Limitations
- 8,000 RPM maximum spindle speed makes the i-1050 less suitable for high-speed aluminum machining — the machine is optimized for steel and titanium
- At 38,000 kg, installation requires very substantial floor loading analysis and likely a concrete pit with isolation
- Capital cost from $650,000 requires consistent aerospace or energy sector workload to justify the investment
- Setup and fixturing for 1,050 mm table work requires overhead crane access and skilled setup personnel familiar with large-part 5-axis fixturing
- 40-tool standard ATC may be insufficient for complex large parts; upgrading to 120 tools is often required and adds cost

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New pricing typically ranges from $650,000 to $950,000 fully configured. The large table, heavy-duty spindle, and automation options drive pricing toward the upper end of this range. Mazak typically quotes the i-1050 5X with custom packages including ATC upgrades and automation for specific customer applications.
02
The i-1050 steps up to a 1,050 mm table (vs 800 mm), 1,500 kg load capacity (vs 1,000 kg), 900x1400x700mm travels (vs 630x1100x600mm), and 45 kW / 500 Nm spindle (vs 37 kW / 350 Nm). The i-1050 is the appropriate choice when parts regularly exceed the i-800's table diameter or workpiece height. The i-800 remains the better value for parts within its capacity range.
03
The table diameter is 1,050 mm, but the machine can accommodate workpieces up to 1,400 mm in diameter — the part extends over the table edges when the trunnion tilts. In 5-axis contouring mode, the practical workpiece envelope is somewhat smaller and depends on fixturing height and the required A-axis tilt range.
04
Yes. The i-1050 5X designation confirms simultaneous 5-axis interpolation with MAZATROL SmoothAi controlling all five axes concurrently. The machine is not limited to 3+2 positioning; it performs simultaneous contouring for aerospace surfaces, turbine blades, and complex structural features.
05
The i-1050 5X is compatible with Mazak's PALLETECH flexible manufacturing system. Given the machine's size and workpiece weight, automation typically involves customized pallet handling solutions. For high-volume aerospace work, Mazak can design integrated FMS systems around multiple i-1050 5X machines sharing a common pallet and tooling management system.
