How much does the Hwacheon M3-5AX cost?
Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Hwacheon M3-5AX that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Hwacheon M3-5AX is a five-axis machining center whose defining dimension is Y: 900 mm (35.4 in), against 750 mm (29.5 in) of X and 550 mm (21.7 in) of Z. The table measures Ø700 x 540 mm (Ø27.6 x 21.3 in), is rated for 800 kgf (1,764 lb) and swings on an A axis through ±120°, with 360° of C rotation.
All three spindle options are 40-taper machines built for speed, from 14,000 to 24,000 rpm. The 14K is the high-torque version, rated 37 / 22 kW (49.6 / 29.5 hp). The 20K and 24K are both rated 37 / 18.5 kW (49.6 / 24.8 hp). On the 20K, Hwacheon also offers a Heidenhain iTNC 640 control in place of the standard Fanuc 31i-B5, and that Heidenhain version of the spindle is listed at 24 kW (32.2 hp). Tooling is BBT-40 as standard, with CAT-40, HSK-A63 or SK-40 as options. Each spindle runs on Ø70 mm (Ø2.8 in) bearings with oil-jet lubrication and oil-cooler jacket cooling.
The M3 carries more tools than its neighbours. The standard magazine has 40 pockets, with 60 or 90 as options, where the M2-5AX has 30 and the M4-5AX 30 with a 60-tool option. Tools may be Ø80 mm (Ø3.1 in) with the adjacent pockets full or Ø160 mm (Ø6.3 in) with them empty, up to 320 mm (12.6 in) long and 8 kg (18 lb). A 90-tool magazine makes sense on a five-axis machine that runs many different parts, because the tools can stay loaded between jobs.
Rapids are 48 m/min (1,890 ipm) on X and Y and 40 m/min (1,575 ipm) on Z, with A at 30 rpm and C at 40 rpm. Spindle nose to table runs from 140 to 690 mm (5.5 to 27.2 in). This is a big installation for a 40-taper machine: 100 kVA of supply, a 550 L coolant tank and 21,000 kgf (46,297 lb) of machine on a 4,100 x 6,595 mm (161.4 x 259.6 in) footprint, 3,855 mm (151.8 in) high.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 900 mm (35.4 in) of Y travel on a 750 mm (29.5 in) X frame
- Table rated 800 kgf (1,764 lb), against 300 kg (661 lb) on the M2-5AX
- 40-tool magazine as standard, with 60 or 90 tools as options
- A axis through ±120° and C through 360°, at 30 rpm and 40 rpm
- 14,000 rpm high-torque spindle rated 37 / 22 kW (49.6 / 29.5 hp)
- Heidenhain iTNC 640 offered as an alternative control on the 20K spindle
Limitations
- No spindle below 14,000 rpm and no 50-taper option; heavier cutting belongs on the BBT-50 M4-5AX
- Z rapid is 40 m/min (1,575 ipm), slower than the 48 m/min (1,890 ipm) of X and Y
- Footprint of 4,100 x 6,595 mm (161.4 x 259.6 in) and 100 kVA supply are large for a 40-taper machine
- Tools are limited to 8 kg (18 lb) and 320 mm (12.6 in)

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Three spindles: the 14K high-torque at 37 / 22 kW (49.6 / 29.5 hp), and the 20K and 24K at 37 / 18.5 kW (49.6 / 24.8 hp). The control is a Fanuc 31i-B5. On the 20K spindle a Heidenhain iTNC 640 is an option, and with it the spindle is listed at 24 kW (32.2 hp).
02
The M4-5AX is the heavier machine: a Ø800 x 630 mm (Ø31.5 x 24.8 in) table rated 1,200 kg (2,646 lb), BBT-50 spindles of 8,000 or 12,000 rpm and 28,000 kg (61,729 lb) of weight. The M3-5AX stays at BBT-40 with spindles from 14,000 to 24,000 rpm, a table rated 800 kgf (1,764 lb) and a weight of 21,000 kgf (46,297 lb).
03
40 as standard, with 60 or 90 as options, selected by memory random. A tool can be Ø80 mm (Ø3.1 in) with neighbours in place or Ø160 mm (Ø6.3 in) with the adjacent pockets empty, 320 mm (12.6 in) long and 8 kg (18 lb).
04
The table is Ø700 x 540 mm (Ø27.6 x 21.3 in) and carries 800 kgf (1,764 lb), with five 18 mm T-slots at 100 mm pitch. Travels are 750 mm (29.5 in) in X, 900 mm (35.4 in) in Y and 550 mm (21.7 in) in Z, and spindle nose to table runs from 140 to 690 mm (5.5 to 27.2 in).
05
A 100 kVA supply, a 550 L coolant tank and floor for a 4,100 x 6,595 mm (161.4 x 259.6 in) footprint with 3,855 mm (151.8 in) of height. The machine weighs 21,000 kgf (46,297 lb), so the foundation needs checking before it arrives.
