Overview

The Hartford Aero-536BL-5X is a five-metre gantry type 5-axis machining center. It has 5,000 mm (196.9 in) of X travel, 3,600 mm (141.7 in) of Y, 1,100 mm of Z with a 1,300 mm option, and a 5,000 x 3,100 mm (196.9 x 122.0 in) table.

The fourth and fifth axes are in the head. Hartford fits a 5 axis head made in Germany by Cytec and states that the assembly delivers high precision. Under the HSK-A100 heading it gives the maximum torque output of the B axis and the C axis as 1,000 Nm each, which is the holding and driving torque available to keep the spindle on its path while the cutter is loaded.

The head carries one of two spindles: HSK-A63 at 24,000 rpm or HSK-A100 at 12,000 rpm. Both are oil-air lubricated according to Hartford.

Below the head, the Z axis is built to stay put thermally. Motor base, ballscrew, nuts and bearings are cooled, a measure Hartford says raises dynamic rigidity and axis accuracy by 15%, and the ram is driven by twin ballscrews. The 5-faced machine on this table, the Aero-536B, has a #50 gear head at 6,000 rpm for comparison.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What five-axis head does the Aero-536BL-5X use?

Hartford states that the machine is assembled with a Germany made Cytec 5 axis head. The maximum torque output of the B and C axes is given as 1,000 Nm each.

02 What spindle speeds are listed for the Aero-536BL-5X?

24,000 rpm for the HSK-A63 spindle and 12,000 rpm for the HSK-A100 spindle. The table for this model has no power row, so motor ratings need to be requested.

03 How is thermal growth controlled on the Aero-536BL-5X?

On the Z axis the motor base, ballscrew, nuts and bearings are completely cooled. Hartford states this increases dynamic rigidity and axis accuracy by 15%. The Z axis also has a twin ballscrew design.

04 What are the wider five-metre 5X models?

The Aero-541BL-5X with a 5,000 x 3,600 mm (196.9 x 141.7 in) table and 4,100 mm (161.4 in) of Y, and the Aero-546BL-5X with 5,000 x 4,100 mm (196.9 x 161.4 in) and 4,600 mm (181.1 in) of Y.
