Overview

The Hartford Aero-1046G-5X is the largest 5-axis machine in Hartford's tables. It is a gantry type 5-axis machining center with a 10,000 x 4,100 mm (393.7 x 161.4 in) table, 10,000 mm (393.7 in) of X travel, 4,600 mm (181.1 in) of Y travel and 1,100 mm of Z, or 1,300 mm optionally.

Everything Hartford says about the Aero 5X applies at full scale here. The gantry rides on four X-axis guideways and is driven by rack and pinion at up to 50 m/min. The cross-beam carries the ram on three guideways with a linear motor design. The ram has four guideways, twin ballscrews and a cooled drive train, and at its end is a 5 axis head made in Germany by Cytec, with a maximum torque output of 1,000 Nm on the B and C axes.

Spindle choice is between HSK-A63 at 18,000 or 24,000 rpm and HSK-A100 at 12,000 rpm. The taper row says one or the other, so it is fixed at order.

Who needs it? Makers of large aircraft structure and of the moulds and jigs behind it, wind blade tooling shops, and builders of big composite hulls and panels. For the same table with heavier cutting on five faces and no contouring, Hartford has the Aero-1046G with a #50 gear head at 6,000 rpm.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Largest 5-axis envelope in the lineup: 10,000 mm (393.7 in) by 4,600 mm (181.1 in)
  • 10,000 x 4,100 mm (393.7 x 161.4 in) table rated at 5,000 kg/m²
  • Rack and pinion X at up to 50 m/min; Y axis with a linear motor design
  • Cytec 5 axis head with 1,000 Nm on B and C

Limitations

  • Z travel of 1,100 mm or 1,300 mm is modest for the envelope
  • No spindle power, accuracy or head-angle figures in the table
  • HSK-A63 or HSK-A100 has to be chosen at order
