Overview

The Mazak VARIAXIS i-800 (designated i-800T in current production) is a full simultaneous 5-axis vertical machining center built for mid-to-large parts that need CAT 50 spindle capability. It sits above the i-700 in the VARIAXIS i-Series lineup, sharing the same architecture but stepping up to a larger table, heavier workpiece capacity, and a CAT 50 taper for more aggressive cutting in steel and titanium.

Axis travels measure 630 x 1,100 x 600 mm (24.8 x 43.3 x 23.6 in), matching the i-700 on X and Y. The signature 1,100 mm Y-axis stroke carries over, providing reach that competitors in this class cannot match. The trunnion table measures 800 mm (31.5 in) diameter and supports workpieces up to 1,000 mm (39.4 in) diameter and 375 mm (14.8 in) height, with a 1,000 kg (2,205 lb) load capacity that comfortably handles heavy steel and titanium fixtures.

The standard spindle runs at 10,000 RPM with 37 kW (50 hp) and 350 Nm (258 ft-lb) through the CAT 50 taper. That torque rating puts the i-800T solidly in heavy-cutting territory for titanium structural parts, landing gear components, and steel mold work. Roller gear cam drives on both the A-axis (-130 to +30 degrees) and C-axis (360-degree continuous) provide backlash-free positioning during simultaneous contouring.

The machine runs on the MAZATROL SmoothAi control with AI-based spindle vibration detection. Rapid traverse hits 42 m/min (1,654 ipm). At 20,000 kg (44,092 lb), the i-800T provides substantial thermal mass for vibration absorption. New VARIAXIS i-800T machines price from $450,000 to $650,000. The machine competes with the Okuma MU-6300V, DMG Mori DMU 80 P, and Makino D500.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • CAT 50 taper with 350 Nm of torque enables aggressive roughing in titanium, steel, and other difficult materials that CAT 40 machines struggle with
  • 1,100 mm Y-axis stroke is significantly longer than competing 5-axis machines in this table-size class, accommodating elongated aerospace structural parts
  • 1,000 kg table load capacity handles heavy steel and titanium fixtures without deflection, maintaining accuracy during aggressive cutting
  • Roller gear cam drives on both rotary axes eliminate backlash and reduce maintenance compared to worm gear designs
  • SmoothAi control with AI-based spindle vibration detection automatically adjusts machining conditions for better surface finish and tool life
  • 20,000 kg machine weight provides excellent vibration damping during heavy cutting operations
  • Two-pallet changer and PALLETECH integration available for production automation

Limitations

  • 10,000 RPM maximum spindle speed limits high-speed aluminum machining; shops running predominantly non-ferrous work should consider the i-700 with 18,000 RPM
  • 42 m/min rapid traverse is noticeably slower than the 60 m/min on the i-700, adding non-cutting time on positioning moves
  • Standard 30-tool magazine is tight for complex multi-feature 5-axis parts; upgrading to 80 or 120 tools adds significant cost
  • CAT 50 tooling costs more per tool than CAT 40, increasing the total tooling investment for shops building up their tool library
  • 375 mm maximum workpiece height limits tall-part applications compared to the i-700 at 500 mm height capacity

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a Mazak VARIAXIS i-800 cost?

New VARIAXIS i-800T machines price between $450,000 and $650,000 depending on spindle configuration, tool magazine size, and automation options. Adding a two-pallet changer or PALLETECH integration pushes the price higher. Used i-800 machines from 2015-2020 appear on the secondary market at $200,000-$350,000.

02 What is the difference between the i-700 and i-800?

The i-800T steps up to a CAT 50 taper (vs CAT 40 on the i-700), providing significantly more spindle torque for heavy cutting. It also has a larger 800mm table vs 700x500mm, higher load capacity (1,000 kg vs 600 kg), and heavier machine weight for better vibration damping. The tradeoff is lower spindle speed (10,000 vs 18,000 RPM) and slower rapids.

03 Is the i-800T good for titanium?

Excellent. The CAT 50 taper with 350 Nm of torque and the rigid 20,000 kg platform make the i-800T one of the better mid-size 5-axis machines for titanium. The 10,000 RPM spindle provides good surface speeds for titanium cutting. For heavy titanium roughing, the i-800T significantly outperforms CAT 40 machines.

04 What control does the i-800T use?

The current production i-800T runs the MAZATROL SmoothAi CNC with a 19-inch touchscreen. SmoothAi adds AI-based spindle vibration detection that automatically adjusts feeds during cutting anomalies. It supports both MAZATROL conversational and full ISO/G-code programming.

05 Can the i-800T be automated?

Yes. An optional two-pallet changer is available, and the machine integrates with PALLETECH for multi-pallet flexible manufacturing. Upgrading to the 80 or 120-tool magazine extends unattended operation capability.
