Overview
At 649 in (16,485 mm) the Onsrud 501EX is the second-longest EX-Series machine, built for extrusions that most machining centers cannot hold in one piece. It is a 5-axis machine with a 33 hp (24.6 kW), 24,000 rpm spindle, a 40 in (1,016 mm) Z-stroke and a work area cross-section of 21 x 14 in (533 x 356 mm).
It lists 12 clamps and 2 material stop zones, the same as the 375EX. Spread over a longer bed, those clamps sit further apart, and that is the point to raise with Onsrud when the profiles are thin-walled or prone to sag.
Long beds are also used the other way: two medium profiles, one per stop zone, with the gantry travelling between them. The machine then never waits for loading.
