Overview

The Nicolas Correa XPIDER is the fast one. Its axes feed at 45 m/min in X, Y and Z, with 60 m/min available in X and Y, which is well above the feeds listed for the maker's other milling machines; the ORIX, for one, lists 30 m/min. It is a high-speed top gantry for five-axis work, delivered with a twist head and electrospindle as standard.

Speed on a large machine is mostly a thermal and structural problem, and the feature list reads accordingly. The ram has an octagonal section and sits close to the crossbeam centre, which cuts the tilting force when X reverses. The crossbeam is built in three layers, steel, insulation, steel, so that a draught in the workshop does not bend it. Air is recirculated through the ram. The base uses the maker's HDC concrete with steel for damping.

Y travel is 2,000 / 3,000 / 4,000 mm, with 3,000 / 4,000 / 5,000 mm between the columns, and Z is 1,000 - 1,500 mm. X is modular: the table lists it as 3,500 + 1,500N mm, a base length extended in equal steps. Table load is 10,000 / 15,000 kg/m2.

Three spindle speeds are listed, 6,000 / 12,000 / 24,000 rpm, on ISO-50, HSK-63 or HSK-100. The power row reads 30 / 35 / 60 kW, and the maker notes that the 35 and 60 kW figures apply only with the E5E electrospindle head. No torque row is published for this model, so cutting data for roughing has to come from the quotation.

Against the ORIX, the other top gantry, the XPIDER is narrower and lower but quicker. The ORIX reaches 5,250 mm in Y at 30 m/min.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 45 m/min feed in X, Y and Z, with optional 60 m/min in X and Y
  • Five-axis twist head with electrospindle as standard equipment
  • Spindle speeds of 6,000 / 12,000 / 24,000 rpm, with up to 60 kW on the E5E electrospindle head
  • Three-layer crossbeam (steel-insulation-steel) and octagonal ram section for thermal stability
  • Modular X travel of 3,500 + 1,500N mm

Limitations

  • No spindle torque figure is published for this model
  • Z travel is limited to 1,000 - 1,500 mm
  • Y travel tops out at 4,000 mm, against 5,250 mm on the ORIX
  • The 60 m/min feed is an option and applies to X and Y only

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How fast is the Correa XPIDER?

Maximum feed is 45 m/min in X, Y and Z. The table lists 45 / 60 m/min for X and Y, and the maker's text describes 60 m/min in X and Y as optional. Z stays at 45 m/min in either case.

02 What spindles does the XPIDER offer?

Programmable speeds of 6,000 / 12,000 / 24,000 rpm with a taper of ISO-50, HSK-63 or HSK-100. The power row lists 30 / 35 / 60 kW, with a note that the two higher figures require the E5E electrospindle head. The page publishes no torque values.

03 What sizes is the XPIDER built in?

Cross travel is 2,000 / 3,000 / 4,000 mm with 3,000 / 4,000 / 5,000 mm between the columns. Vertical travel is 1,000 - 1,500 mm. Longitudinal travel is given as 3,500 + 1,500N mm, so length is added in modules, and the table is 1,500 - 2,500 mm wide.

04 How does the XPIDER differ from the ORIX?

Both are top gantry machines with a five-axis head as standard. The XPIDER feeds at 45 m/min and is the smaller of the two. The ORIX feeds at 30 m/min, but its Y travel runs to 5,250 mm and its vertical travel to 2,000 mm, and it lists a 1,375 Nm roughing spindle.
