Overview

The Huron GU5 Five is a moving-gantry five-axis machining centre built around a 500 mm rotary table. Travels are 600 x 700 x 500 mm (23.6 x 27.6 x 19.7 in) and the table carries 400 kg (882 lb), which places the machine in the most common size class for five-axis job-shop work.

Huron's argument for the gantry layout is a combination of stability and high dynamics. The numbers offered in support are a 50 m/min rapid traverse and a 10,000 kg (22,046 lb) machine weight on a footprint of 3,650 x 2,250 mm. For a 500 mm table that is a dense, heavy machine.

The electrospindle runs to 18,000 rpm with 30 kW and 84/110 Nm on the Siemens motor rating at S1/S6-40%. Forty tools sit in a pickup-type changer, each up to 300 mm long and 10 kg. The spindle nose can be set between 100 and 600 mm above the table plane.

On the rotary side, A swivels ±120° at 50 rpm and C turns 360° at 75 rpm with direct drive. A 1,000 rpm turning table is optional. Positioning is stated as 0.006 mm and repeatability as 0.003 mm. Huron lists cooling of ballscrew nuts and linear guides and a spindle chiller as standard features of the series, along with a chip conveyor and Ethernet connectivity.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 400 kg (882 lb) on a 500 mm rotary table
  • 30 kW, 18,000 rpm electrospindle
  • 40-tool pickup changer with tools up to 300 mm long
  • 10,000 kg machine weight for a 600 x 700 x 500 mm envelope
  • Ballscrew nut and linear-guide cooling for thermal stability

Limitations

  • Spindle torque is 84/110 Nm, limiting heavy roughing
  • A-axis speed is 50 rpm, against 75 rpm for the C axis
  • Turning at 1,000 rpm requires the optional turning table
  • Maximum tool diameter is 100 mm with all pockets full

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What size is the Huron GU5 Five table?

The rotary table is 500 mm in diameter with an admissible load of 400 kg (882 lb). T-slot size and centre bore are listed as 14 / 40 mm. The distance from spindle nose to table plane is 100 to 600 mm.

02 How does the GU5 Five differ from the GU3 Five?

The GU3 Five is smaller, with a 320 mm table, 150 kg of load and 420 x 520 x 420 mm travels. The GU3 Five has tighter stated positioning, 0.004 mm against 0.006 mm, and a spindle rated 26 kW against 30 kW here.

03 Can the GU5 Five turn?

Huron lists a turning table speed of 1,000 rpm as optional. Without that option the C axis rotates at 75 rpm, which is for positioning and simultaneous milling.

04 What are the dimensions and weight?

The machine is about 3,650 mm long, 2,250 mm wide and 2,900 mm high, and weighs about 10,000 kg (22,046 lb). Huron marks these values as approximate and refers to the detailed machine layout.
