Overview

The AXA VHC 2 - XTS is a travelling column machining centre whose spindle head tilts about a B-axis, so the same SK 40 spindle works vertically from above and horizontally from the side. The head swivels ± 90° as standard, ± 100° as an option, in 0.001° increments. Travels are 600 mm (23.6 in) in Y and, in X, anything from 1,760 mm to 9,000 mm with the spindle vertical.

Z travel depends on the head position. AXA lists 850 mm with the spindle horizontal and 820 mm with it vertical. In the vertical position the spindle nose can come right down to the table, 0 to 820 mm, which the fixed-head VSC 2 - XTS with its 180 mm minimum cannot do.

On its own the tilting head gives vertical and horizontal machining of a part in one clamping. AXA states that 5 face machining or 5 axes simultaneous machining needs a rotary table in addition, and that a fully interpolating head is an optional feature. Buyers should therefore specify the rotary table and the interpolating head if simultaneous work is the goal.

The standard drive no. 110 delivers 143 Nm and 30 kW at 40% DC. Drives no. 100, 111 and 113 are optional, the last with 255 Nm. Tools come from an XTS tower magazine with 22 pockets, extendable to 216, in approx. 5 s. The fixed table is rated at 1,000 kg/m² and rapids are 40/40/30 m/min.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Tilting spindle head with ± 90° B-axis swivel (± 100° optional) and 0.001° indexing
  • Vertical and horizontal machining with one SK 40 spindle in one clamping
  • Spindle nose reaches the table surface in the vertical position: 0 to 820 mm
  • X travel to order from 1,760 mm to 9,000 mm, with optional pendulum travel
  • XTS magazine with 22 pockets, expandable up to 216

Limitations

  • A fully interpolating head is an optional feature; the standard head positions in 0.001° steps
  • 5-axis simultaneous machining also requires a rotary table, which is not in the data sheet's standard scope
  • Z travel drops from 850 mm to 820 mm with the spindle vertical
  • Y travel is 600 mm with no wider option on this model
06

Best For

Long parts that need machining on the top and on the long sides in one set-up Angled holes and faces set with the B-axis head Shaft and pipe work with a rotary table on the fixed bed SK 40 or HSK A63 work in aluminium and steel

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Is the AXA VHC 2 - XTS a 5-axis machine?

It has three linear axes and a tilting spindle head (B-axis). According to AXA, 5 face machining or 5 axes simultaneous machining is achieved in combination with a rotary table. The head indexes in 0.001° increments as standard, and a fully interpolating head is listed as an optional feature.

02 How far does the spindle head tilt?

The swivelling range of the B-axis is ± 90°, with ± 100° as an optional feature. That covers vertical machining, horizontal machining to either side and any angle between. Indexing is 0.001°.

03 What are the travels with the spindle vertical and horizontal?

X is 1,760 mm to 9,000 mm with the spindle vertical and Y is 600 mm. Z is 850 mm horizontal and 820 mm vertical. The distance between table and spindle nose is 0 to 820 mm in the vertical position and 180 mm to 1,030 mm in the horizontal position.

04 What is the difference between the VHC 2 - XTS and the VHC 2 - XTS50?

The VHC 2 - XTS50 carries an SK 50 spindle with 286 Nm and 45 kW as standard and changes tools in approx. 7 s. The VHC 2 - XTS has SK 40 with 143 Nm and 30 kW and changes tools in approx. 5 s. Y travel is 600 mm on both.
