Overview

Slow and strong describes the ROMI C 2100H. Its spindle tops out at 300 rpm, its low range ends at 100 rpm, and in exchange the maximum torque allowed climbs to 28,220 Nm. The swing over the bed is 2,150 mm (85 in), and a part that size seldom needs more speed than this headstock gives.

The arithmetic of large diameters explains the gearing. Cutting speed at the rim of a two-metre part is reached at very few revolutions, while the cutting force acts on a long lever arm. Romi therefore keeps the 114 hp / 84 kW motor of the C 1800H and trades spindle speed for torque through the gear ratios.

Centers stand 1,100 mm (43 in) above the bed. Over the long cross slide the lathe swings 1,600 mm (63 in), and in front of a short carriage 1,800 mm (71 in). Cross travel is 940 mm (37 in). Between centers it carries 30,000 kg (66,100 lbs), on a bed 1,400 mm (55 in) wide, in five lengths from 4 to 10 m.

Operation is from a guarded platform with a sliding control panel, since the spindle centre line is above head height. The tailstock travels by servo drive and has a 290 mm (11.4 in) quill with 300 mm (11.8 in) of travel. Both axes rapid at 8 m/min (315 in/min). Expect about 45,000 kg (99,200 lbs) for the 4.0 m machine on 9.0 x 3.6 m (354 x 142 in) of floor, and 100 kVA of installed power. The CNC is a Siemens Sinumerik 840D with a 21.5” touch screen.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Maximum torque allowed of 28,220 Nm in a 1 to 100 rpm low range
  • Swing of 2,150 mm (85 in) over the bed and 1,600 mm (63 in) over the cross slide
  • Holds 30,000 kg (66,100 lbs) between centers
  • Swing of 1,800 mm (71 in) in front of a short carriage
  • Rack and double pinion Z drive with linear scale at 8 m/min (315 in/min)

Limitations

  • Top spindle speed is 300 rpm
  • Weight capacity is no higher than on the C 1800H
  • Cross travel of 940 mm (37 in) is less than half the bed swing
  • Needs 100 kVA and a foundation for about 45,000 kg (99,200 lbs)

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How much torque does the ROMI C 2100H have?

Maximum torque allowed is 28,220 Nm. The geared headstock has a range I of 1 to 100 rpm and a range II reaching 300 rpm. The main motor is 114 hp / 84 kW on the S2 - 30 min. rating and 82 hp / 60 kW continuous.

02 What is the largest diameter for the C 2100H?

Swing over the bed is 2,150 mm (85 in). Swing over the cross slide is 1,600 mm (63 in) with the long carriage and 1,800 mm (71 in) in front of the cross slide with a short carriage. Centers height is 1,100 mm (43 in).

03 Why does the C 2100H have an operator platform?

Romi states that the C 1800H, C 2100H, C 2200H and C 2600H have a platform that gives the operator access to the panel, the turret and the workpiece for setup. It has a front cover, door viewer protection and electric locks for safety.

04 What bed lengths are offered on the C 2100H?

Distance between centers is 4 / 5.5 / 7 / 8.5 / 10 m (157 / 217 / 276 / 335 / 394 in). The catalogue quotes about 45,000 kg (99,200 lbs) at 4.0 m and adds 4,000 kg (8,800 lbs) per extra 1,500 mm (59”) bed segment.
