Overview

Driven tools are what the M in ROMI VTL 500MR stands for. It is the 500 mm (20 in) vertical turning center with a BMT 65 turret, 12 stations for fixed and driven tools, so bolt circles, cross holes and milled flats are cut while the part is still in the chuck. Romi prints its figures in a shared column with the VTL 500ML.

The live-tool drive is rated 9 hp / 7 kW with 42 Nm (30 lb-ft), runs from 4 to 4,000 rpm and takes ER-32 collets for Ø 3 - Ø 20 mm tools in both axial and radial holders. On a disc-shaped part that covers the usual secondary work: drilling and tapping a flange pattern, or milling a slot across a face. No Y axis appears in the table.

Fitting the driven turret costs some height. Maximum turning height is 620 mm (24 in), where the fixed-tool VTL 500R reaches 668 mm (26 in). Everything else matches that machine: 500 mm (20 in) maximum and 390 mm (15.4 in) recommended turning diameter, 325 mm (12.8 in) of X and 700 mm (28 in) of Z travel, and 30 m/min (1,181 in/min) rapids.

Main spindle power is 28 hp / 21 kW through an A2-8” nose at 2 to 2,500 rpm, with 624 Nm (460 lb-ft). Chucks are 315 or 390 mm (12.4 or 15.4 in). A linear scale on X and Z is optional for work that needs tighter positioning. Installed power is 30 kVA, weight 5,000 kg (11,000 lbs), and the Siemens Sinumerik 828D handles programming.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • BMT 65 turret with 12 stations for fixed and driven tools
  • Driven tools at 4 to 4,000 rpm with 9 hp / 7 kW and 42 Nm (30 lb-ft)
  • ER-32 axial and radial holders for Ø 3 - Ø 20 mm tools
  • Same 1.7 x 2.3 m (67 x 91 in) footprint as the fixed-tool model
  • Linear roller guides with 30 m/min (1,181 in/min) rapids

Limitations

  • Turning height is 620 mm (24 in), less than the 668 mm (26 in) of the VTL 500R
  • No Y axis is listed, so milling stays on the centre line
  • Spindle speed is capped at 2,400 rpm with the 390 mm (15.4 in) chuck
  • Linear scales on X and Z are optional

Best For

Flanges and hubs needing drilled and tapped bolt circles Chucked castings finished in one clamping Medium and high production of parts up to 500 mm (20 in)

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What can the driven tools on the ROMI VTL 500MR do?

Drilling, milling and tapping, according to Romi. The driven tool motor is rated 9 hp / 7 kW (S2 - 30 min. rating) with 42 Nm (30 lb-ft) and a speed range of 4 to 4,000 rpm. Holders are ER-32 for Ø 3 - Ø 20 mm tools, axial and radial.

02 Does the driven turret reduce capacity on the VTL 500MR?

In height, yes. Maximum turning height is 620 mm (24 in), against 668 mm (26 in) on the VTL 500R. Turning diameter, chuck sizes and the 590 kg (1,300 lbs) maximum weight on the chuck are unchanged.

03 Which turret interface does the VTL 500MR use?

BMT 65, with 12 stations. Square tools are 25 x 25 mm (0.98 x 0.98 in) and boring bars Ø 40 mm (1.57 in). The larger VTL 700MR uses BMT 75 with ER-40 holders.

04 What are the main spindle figures of the VTL 500MR?

An A2-8” spindle running from 2 to 2,500 rpm, driven by a 28 hp / 21 kW motor on the S2 - 30 min. rating, with 624 Nm (460 lb-ft) on the power graph. The chuck is 315 or 390 mm (12.4 or 15.4 in).
