Overview

The ROMI GL 170G is a gang-tool turning center for small parts cut from bar: 170 mm (6.7 in) of maximum turnable diameter, a 6,000 rpm A2-5” spindle and no turret at all. Tools are bolted in a row on a slotted table, and the cross slide carries each one to the work in turn.

That layout explains the unusual travels. X travel, at 450 mm (17.7 in), is longer than the 300 mm (11.8 in) of Z, because X has to carry the whole line of tools past the spindle. The gang table measures 180 x 550 mm with 3 T slots and is inclined at 60° so chips fall away. With no turret to unclamp and index, tool-to-tool time is only the X move, and X rapids at 36 m/min (1,417 in/min), faster than the 30 m/min (1,181 in/min) of Z.

Bar capacity is 42 / 51 mm (1.6 / 2 in) through a 60 mm (2.4 in) spindle bore. The main motor is rated 15 cv (14.79 hp) / 11 kW, and Romi notes that the headstock sits on insulating plates to keep cartridge heat out of the base. External turning tools are 20 x 20 mm (0.79 x 0.79 in) and internal tools Ø 25 mm (0.98 in). A bar feeder and a parts dresser are options.

The trade-off of gang tooling is clearance. Every tool on the table has to miss the chuck and the part while its neighbour cuts, so the number of tools shrinks as part diameter grows, and there is no tailstock in the specification. For short, bar-fed parts made in volume that rarely matters. The control is a Fanuc 0i-TF Plus with touchscreen, the footprint 2,200 x 1,900 mm (86.6 x 74.8 in) without chip conveyor, and installed power 20 kVA.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Gang tools table, 180 x 550 mm with 3 T slots, with no turret indexing between tools
  • X rapid of 36 m/min (1,417 in/min) to move between tools quickly
  • 6,000 rpm cartridge-type spindle with an ASA A2-5” nose
  • Bar capacity of 42 / 51 mm (1.6 / 2 in)
  • Small footprint: 2,200 x 1,900 mm (86.6 x 74.8 in) without chip conveyor

Limitations

  • Maximum turnable diameter is 170 mm (6.7 in)
  • Z travel is 300 mm (11.8 in) and no tailstock is listed, so long parts are out
  • No turret and no driven tools in the specification
  • Bar feeder and parts dresser are optional equipment

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is a gang-tool lathe like the ROMI GL 170G?

Instead of a turret, the tools sit side by side on a table that moves with the cross slide. On the GL 170G the table is 180 x 550 mm with 3 T slots and is inclined at 60°. Changing tool is a short X move, which suits fast cycles on small parts.

02 What bar size can the GL 170G run?

Bar capacity is 42 / 51 mm (1.6 / 2 in), depending on the chuck or collet arrangement, through a spindle hole of 60 mm (2.4 in). Romi lists a bar feeder as an option, and a parts dresser for collecting finished pieces.

03 How fast is the GL 170G?

The cartridge-type headstock reaches 6,000 rpm on a 15 cv (14.79 hp) / 11 kW motor. Rapid traverse is 36 m/min (1,417 in/min) on X and 30 m/min (1,181 in/min) on Z.

04 What control and power does the GL 170G need?

It is equipped with a Fanuc 0i-TF Plus CNC with a touchscreen display and integrated safety system, with Ethernet, PCMCIA and USB interfaces. Total installed power is 20 kVA.
