Overview

The Johnford ST-60BH is the mid-length, mid-spindle lathe of the H frame: 1,200 mm (47.2 in) of Z travel, an A2-11 spindle and 920 mm (36.2 in) of swing over the bed.

Its interest lies in what the frame does for the milling options. A Y axis of ±75 mm (±3 in), a 12-position live tool turret in VDI or BMT and a 0.001° C axis can all be added. On a part that nearly fills the 700 mm (27.6 in) swing over the cross slide, bolt circles and flats sit far from the center, and the 370 mm (14.6 in) of X travel is what lets a live tool reach them. The 7 kW X-axis motor carries the heavier live turret without strain.

Without those options it is a strong two-axis lathe. The spindle has a 132.5 mm (5.2 in) bore, 116 mm (4.6 in) of bar capacity and four automatic speeds to 2,000 rpm, with 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) standard and 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp) optional.

The tailstock travels 900 mm (35.4 in) and uses an MT#5 quill of Ø125 mm (4.9 in). Rapid traverse is 15 m/min on X and 18 m/min on Z. Weight is 12,200 kg (26,840 lb) and length 6,195 mm (243.9 in).
