Overview

The ROMI VTL 700R takes the vertical turning center format up to 700 mm (28 in) of turning diameter and changes the machine underneath to suit heavier cuts. It has an A2-11” spindle, a 46 hp / 34 kW motor and hardened and ground square guideways in place of the linear roller guides of the 500 size. The VTL 700L shares its column in the specification table.

Torque is the reason to choose it. In direct drive the spindle gives 1,043 Nm (769 lb-ft) over a 2 to 2,000 rpm range. With the ZF reduction gearbox, which the table lists for this fixed-tool version and not for the VTL 700MR, a 6 to 600 rpm low range doubles that to 2,070 Nm (1,527 lb-ft). Large cast iron and forged steel parts at low surface speeds are where that range earns its place.

Tooling is heavier as well: 32 x 32 mm (1.26 x 1.26 in) square shanks and Ø 50 mm (2.0 in) boring bars on a 12-station Romi disc. The chuck is 390 or 500 mm (15.4 or 19.7 in) and may carry 1,200 kg (2,700 lbs), about twice the load of the VTL 500R. With the 500 mm chuck, speed is limited to 1,500 rpm.

Square guides trade speed for damping, and rapids are 20 m/min (787 in/min) on both axes. X travel is 365 mm (14.4 in), Z travel 700 mm (28 in) and turning height 627 mm (25 in). The recommended turning diameter is 470 mm (18.5 in). The door opens 790 mm (31 in), wider than the 750 mm (30 in) maximum diameter allowed, so loading is not restricted as it is on the smaller machine. Weight is 7,000 kg (15,500 lbs) and installed power 50 kVA.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does the gearbox option give on the ROMI VTL 700R?

A low range of 6 to 600 rpm and a high range of 2 to 2,000 rpm. The power graph shows 2,070 Nm (1,527 lb-ft) with the reduction gearbox, against 1,043 Nm (769 lb-ft) for the direct-drive A2-11” headstock. The table shows no gearbox for the VTL 700MR.

02 How does the VTL 700R differ from the VTL 500R?

It is a heavier design. The VTL 700R has an A2-11” spindle, 46 hp / 34 kW and square guideways with 20 m/min (787 in/min) rapids. The VTL 500R has an A2-8” spindle, 28 hp / 21 kW and linear roller guides with 30 m/min (1,181 in/min) rapids. Z travel is 700 mm (28 in) on both.

03 What is the largest part for the VTL 700R?

Maximum turning diameter is 700 mm (28 in), with 470 mm (18.5 in) recommended, and maximum turning height is 627 mm (25 in). The maximum diameter allowed is 750 mm (30 in) and the chuck can carry 1,200 kg (2,700 lbs).

04 What tools fit the VTL 700R turret?

The T type turret is servodriven with hydraulic locking and holds 12 fixed tools on a Romi disc. Square tool section is 32 x 32 mm (1.26 x 1.26 in) and bar diameter Ø 50 mm (2.0 in).
