Overview

A 104 mm (4.1 in) hole through the spindle is the first thing to know about the ROMI C 620. It is a mid-size flat-bed CNC lathe with a 620 mm (24 in) swing over the bed and a single A2-8” headstock, and that hole lets long tube and bar stock pass through the chuck on a machine of moderate size.

The spindle is belt driven without gears and runs from 1 to 1,800 rpm. Its 25 hp / 18.5 kW motor produces 868 Nm (640 lb-ft), so the C 620 is built around torque at moderate speed, not surface speed on small diameters. The next model up, the C 680, keeps the same 104 mm (4.1 in) hole on its A2-8” version but uses a geared headstock.

Two bed lengths are listed: 1.0 / 2.0 m (39 / 79 in) between centers, with 1,025 / 2,025 mm (40 / 80 in) of carriage travel. The short bed weighs about 5,000 kg (11,000 lbs) and the long one 5,550 kg (12,200 lbs). Cross slide travel is 360 mm (14.2 in), and 346 mm (13.6 in) swings over the cross slide. Rapids are 8 m/min (315 in/min).

Turret choice is wide at this size. An 8-station horizontal automatic turret takes Romi or VDI - 40 holders, a 4-station vertical automatic turret is the simpler alternative, and an 8-station VDI - 40 turret for driven tools adds ER - 32 collets turning at 3 to 3,400 rpm. All are options, as are the quick change holder and the rear tool holder. The carriage keeps electronic handwheels for manual-style work, and the control is a Siemens Sinumerik 828D.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Spindle hole of 104 mm (4.1 in) on an A2-8” nose for tube and bar work
  • 868 Nm (640 lb-ft) of spindle torque from a 25 hp / 18.5 kW motor
  • Two bed lengths, 1.0 / 2.0 m (39 / 79 in) between centers
  • Optional 8-station driven-tool turret, VDI - 40, with a 3 to 3,400 rpm tool speed range
  • Quill of 100 mm (3.9 in) diameter with a CM 5 taper and 180 mm (7.1 in) stroke

Limitations

  • Top spindle speed is 1,800 rpm, low for small diameters and for aluminium
  • One headstock only; there is no smaller, faster nose as on the C 510
  • Rapid traverse drops to 8 m/min (315 in/min)
  • Drag positioning of the tailstock and the hydraulic quill are options

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How big is the spindle bore of the ROMI C 620?

The spindle hole diameter is 104 mm (4.1 in) on an ASA A2-8” nose. The headstock is direct drive, with a speed range of 1 to 1,800 rpm, a 25 hp / 18.5 kW main motor (S6 - 40% rating) and 868 Nm (640 lb-ft) on the power graph.

02 Which bed lengths are available for the C 620?

Romi lists 1.0 / 2.0 m (39 / 79 in) between centers. Carriage travel is 1,025 / 2,025 mm (40 / 80 in). Floor space is 3.85 x 2.08 m (152 x 82 in) for the short bed and 4.85 x 2.08 m (191 x 82 in) for the long bed, both without chip conveyor.

03 Does the C 620 take driven tools?

As an option. The 8-station horizontal automatic turret for driven tools uses VDI - 40 holders, with axial driven holders for ER - 32 collets (Ø 3 to Ø 20 mm) and a driven tool speed range of 3 to 3,400 rpm.

04 What tailstock does the C 620 have?

A manual tailstock with a 100 mm (3.9 in) quill, 180 mm (7.1 in) of stroke and a CM 5 taper hole. Body positioning is manual as standard, with drag through the table as an option, and a hydraulic quill drive can replace the manual one.
