Overview

With 1,800 mm (70.9 in) between its spindles, the Johnford SL-80A-2S handles long parts that need both ends finished. It is the middle length of the three large twin-spindle SL lathes.

Why use a sub-spindle instead of a tailstock on a part this long? Because of the ends. A tailstock centre occupies the end face, so that face, its centre bore and any thread or spline next to it must be machined in a second setup on another machine or after turning the part around. A sub-spindle grips the outside diameter and leaves the end free for the turret, or takes the whole part over so that the driven end can be finished. For shafts with threaded ends, bored ends or bearing seats at both extremes, that removes a handling step and the alignment error that goes with it.

The cost is support. An 8 in chuck with a Ø66 mm (Ø2.6 in) bore is a grip, not a centre, and the accessory list states that the sub-spindle replaces the tailstock. Steady rests, which Johnford offers in manual and hydraulic versions, matter more here than on the tailstock models.

The main spindle is the 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) unit with a 12 in chuck, Ø115 mm (Ø4.5 in) bore and 2 step automatic transmission. Bar capacity is Ø91 mm (Ø3.6 in), or Ø102 mm (Ø4 in) as an option.

Bed figures: Ø700 mm (Ø27.6 in) swing, Ø540 mm (Ø21.3 in) over the cross slide, 295 mm (11.6 in) of X. Weight is 14,500 kg (31,900 lb) and length 7,200 mm (283.5 in).
