Overview

With 1,500 mm (59 in) between centers and the same travel on Z, the Johnford HT-60-2S is the mid-length sub-spindle lathe of the large HT frame. One 12-station turret works on a 45° bed with 320 mm (12.6 in) of X travel.

What the extra bed buys over the HT-40-2S, which stops at 1,000 mm (39.4 in), is room for parts that are both long and need their far end machined: hydraulic cylinder tubes, rolls with journals, pipe with a connection at each end. The part is turned as far as the turret can reach, gripped by the sub-spindle, and its first end is then free.

Swing over the bed is Ø730 mm (28.7 in) and swing over the cross slide Ø600 mm (23.6 in). The main spindle is chosen from five variants. The table gives B as an A2-11 nose with a Ø132.5 mm (5.2 in) bore and Ø116 mm (4.6 in) bar capacity at 2,000 rpm, and D as an A2-15 nose with Ø165 mm (6.5 in) bar capacity at 1,000 rpm. Motors are 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) on A and B and 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp) on C, D and E.

For long work the options list matters: manual steady rests made by Johnford, hydraulic steady rests with manual travelling or a CNC motor, and an independent boring bar system on the lower guideways. Weight runs from 18,500 kg (40,700 lb) to 18,700 kg (41,140 lb).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 1,500 mm (59 in) of Z travel with a sub-spindle for the second end
  • Main bar capacity up to Ø204 mm (8 in) with variant E
  • Optional 37 / 45 kW (49.6 / 60.3 hp) motor on variants C, D and E
  • Manual and hydraulic steady rests are listed options
  • Heavy box ways on all axes

Limitations

  • No tailstock: a sub-spindle replaces it, so long parts rely on the sub-spindle or a steady rest for support
  • Sub-spindle bar capacity is Ø91 mm (3.6 in) as standard, whatever the main spindle
  • Rapids are 12 m/min on X and 15 m/min on Z, slower than the 15 m/min and 18 m/min of the HT-35-2S
  • Steady rests and the boring bar system are extra
06

Best For

Cylinder tubes and rolls machined at both ends in one setup Pipe and tube work through bores up to Ø236 mm (9.3 in) Medium-length shafts handed over to a second spindle

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How does the HT-60-2S differ from the HT-40-2S and HT-80-2S?

In bed length. The HT-40-2S has 1,000 mm (39.4 in) between centers, the HT-60-2S 1,500 mm (59 in) and the HT-80-2S 2,000 mm (78.7 in). Spindle variants, X travel and the turret are shared. Swing over the bed drops slightly with length: Ø750 mm (29.5 in) on the HT-40-2S, Ø730 mm (28.7 in) here and Ø710 mm (28 in) on the HT-80-2S.

02 Can the HT-60-2S support a long shaft without a tailstock?

The sub-spindle takes the place of the tailstock and can hold the free end. For support along the length, Johnford lists manual steady rests and hydraulic steady rests with manual travelling or a CNC motor as options.

03 Which spindle motors are available on the HT-60-2S?

Standard motors are 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) for variants A and B and 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp) for C, D and E. Optional motors are 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp) for B and 37 / 45 kW (49.6 / 60.3 hp) for C, D and E.

04 What are the dimensions of the HT-60-2S?

5,600 x 3,470 x 2,840 mm (220.5 x 136.6 x 111.8 in). The weight depends on the spindle variant, from 18,500 kg (40,700 lb) for A to 18,700 kg (41,140 lb) for E.
