Overview

The Johnford ST-160CH is the four-metre machine of the 1,000 mm (39.4 in) swing frame with the A2-15 spindle: 4,050 mm (159.4 in) of Z travel, 800 mm (31.5 in) over the cross slide and 24,400 kg (53,680 lb).

On work of this scale a second setup is expensive. Turning a four-metre part end for end means a crane lift, re-chucking and re-indicating, so anything that avoids it pays back quickly. Two options on Johnford's list address it. A sub-spindle or counter-spindle can replace the tailstock, so that both ends are machined in one clamping sequence. And a C axis with a live tool turret, plus the Y axis if needed, takes over drilling and milling that would otherwise go to another machine.

Neither changes the basic turning specification. The spindle has a 152 mm (6 in) bore, 139 mm (5.5 in) of bar capacity and a 200 mm (7.9 in) bearing, and is driven by 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp) or optionally 37 / 45 kW (49.6 / 60.3 hp) to 1,500 rpm.

The standard tailstock travels 3,600 mm (141.7 in) with a Ø200 mm (7.9 in) MT#7 quill. X travel is 420 mm (16.5 in) and length 9,926 mm (390.8 in).

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How can the ST-160CH avoid turning a long part around?

With the optional sub-spindle or counter-spindle in replacement of the tailstock, which grips the far end so the first end can be machined. The standard machine has a programmable tailstock.

02 What are the capacities of the ST-160CH?

Swing over the bed 1,000 mm (39.4 in), over the cross slide 800 mm (31.5 in), Z travel 4,050 mm (159.4 in), X travel 420 mm (16.5 in) and bar capacity 139 mm (5.5 in).

03 How does the ST-160CH compare with the ST-160CX?

The ST-160CX is the next frame up, with 1,200 mm (47.2 in) of swing over the bed, 1,000 mm (39.4 in) over the cross slide and 520 mm (20.5 in) of X travel. It weighs 24,500 kg (53,900 lb) against 24,400 kg (53,680 lb).

04 What are the dimensions of the ST-160CH?

9,926 x 2,504 x 2,955 mm (390.8 x 98.6 x 116.3 in). The machine weighs 24,400 kg (53,680 lb) and has a 60° slant bed.
