Overview

The longest twin-spindle lathe in Johnford's SL table is the SL-100A-2S, with 2,300 mm (90.6 in) of travel on the Z1 and Z2 axes. A 12 in main spindle and an 8 in sub-spindle face each other across a bed that swings Ø700 mm (Ø27.6 in).

Few parts need a sub-spindle at this length, and those that do are specific. Long hydraulic and pneumatic cylinder tubes are one: both ends are bored, grooved and threaded, and concentricity between the ends decides whether the cylinder seals. Others are drill rods and oilfield tubulars with a connection at each end, long printing cylinders with journals at both sides, and drive shafts with splines at both ends. In each case the sub-spindle lets the second end be machined in the same coordinate system as the first.

The spindles are those of the shorter large models. Main: 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp), 2 step automatic transmission, 3,000 rpm, Ø115 mm (Ø4.5 in) bore. Sub: 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp), 4,500 rpm, Ø66 mm (Ø2.6 in) bore. A tube larger than the sub-spindle bore is gripped on its outside diameter in the 8 in chuck.

Between two chucks 2,300 mm apart a tube will sag and whip. The optional hydraulic steady rests, and coolant through the turret at 20 bar or above for internal work, are the accessories to discuss first.

The machine weighs 15,000 kg (33,000 lb), is 7,700 mm (303.1 in) long, and rapids at 12 / 10 / 15 / 15 m/min (472 / 394 / 591 / 591 ipm).
