Overview

Smallest of the table-type vertical turning centers from Johnford, the VTC-800ATC has a Ø810 mm (Ø31.9 in) work table and turns up to Ø1,000 mm (Ø39.4 in). It is also the fastest of them: the table runs 10-800 rpm, where the next size, the VTC-1000ATC, tops out at 650 rpm.

The design is the classic single-ram vertical lathe. A ram of 250 x 250 mm (9.8 x 9.8 in) travels 900 mm (35.4 in) in Z and 870 mm (34.3 in) in X on a cross rail, and the rail itself moves 400 mm (15.7 in) in W to suit the part height. Instead of a turret, the ram takes one tool at a time from a 12-tool ATC with BT-50 shanks. Turning tools sit in holders up to 300W x 155T x 500L (mm) and weigh up to 50 kg (110 lb).

Why a tool changer on a lathe? A ram with one rigid tool has more clearance inside a deep bore than a turret has, and the magazine can grow: 16, 24, 40 and 60 tools are options. Add the optional power spindle, 2-2,400 rpm with 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp), and the optional C-axis, and the machine drills and mills bolt circles in the same clamping.

The table carries 2,000 kg (4,400 lb) and the part can stand 800 mm (31.5 in) high. Table drive is 18.5 / 22 kW (24.8 / 29.5 hp), the smallest motor in the series, with 3,455 Nm (2,548 lb-ft) of torque through the automatic 2-speed gearbox. At 22,000 kg (48,400 lb), it is a substantial machine for its turning diameter.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What size of part does the VTC-800ATC turn?

Maximum swing and turning diameter are both Ø1,000 mm (Ø39.4 in), maximum turning height is 800 mm (31.5 in) and the work table is Ø810 mm (Ø31.9 in) with a load limit of 2,000 kg (4,400 lb).

02 How does the VTC-800ATC change tools?

An automatic tool changer holds 12 tools as standard (16, 24, 40 or 60 optional) with 7 / 24 taper BT-50 shanks. Tool change time is 30 sec, maximum tool weight 50 kg (110 lb) and maximum load of the ATC 350 kg (770 lb).

03 Is live tooling standard on the VTC-800ATC?

No. The power spindle, 2-2,400 rpm with an 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp) motor or 15 / 18.5 kW (20.1 / 24.8 hp) as a further option, is listed as optional, as are the C-axis and its 3 kW CF axis motor.

04 How does the VTC-800ATC compare with the VTC-1000ATC?

The VTC-1000ATC turns Ø1,200 mm (Ø47.2 in) on a Ø1,000 mm (Ø39.4 in) table that carries 4,000 kg (8,800 lb), with 10,049 Nm (7,412 lb-ft) of torque and a 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp) motor. Both have the same 5,590 x 5,555 x 5,525 mm (220 x 218.7 x 217.5 in) outline.
