Johnford SL-30 — price

Price estimate: uncertain

We have no price for the Johnford SL-30 that we can cite and no estimate we can stand behind, so this page shows no number rather than a guess. A quote from Johnford or an authorised dealer is the reliable figure.

What moves the final price

  • Spindle, control and probing options
  • Tool changer capacity and tooling package
  • Automation — pallet changers, bar feeders, robot cells
  • Freight, rigging, installation and training
  • Region, dealer and time of year

Overview

An 8 in chuck and an 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp) spindle make the Johnford SL-30 the general-purpose size of the small SL turning centers. Bar capacity is Ø51 mm (Ø2 in), the spindle nose is A2-6 and top speed is 4,500 rpm.

It shares its bed with the SL-20. Both have Ø400 mm (Ø15.7 in) of swing over the bed, Ø330 mm (Ø13 in) over the cross slide, 180 mm (7.1 in) of X and 600 mm (23.6 in) of Z, and the same 1,851 x 1,862 mm (72.9 x 73.3 in) cross-section. The SL-30 puts twice the motor power on that bed, with a Ø100 mm (Ø3.9 in) spindle bearing against Ø90 mm (Ø3.5 in) on the SL-20.

Power without gearing has a limit, and the table is plain about it: the transmission is one step. Torque for large-diameter roughing in steel therefore depends on the motor alone. Johnford offers a 2-speed belt-type gearbox as an option for this size, and it is the option to consider if the work is forgings and castings near the 8 in chuck's capacity instead of bar.

The saddle is inclined at 30° and all axes run on box ways, which is a heavier construction than linear guides and suits interrupted cuts. Tailstock travel is 500 mm (19.7 in); the quill is hydraulic, with an MT#4 fixed centre and an MT#3 rotary quill as an option. The machine weighs 4,000 kg (8,800 lb).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp) spindle on a compact 4,000 kg (8,800 lb) machine
  • 8 in chuck with Ø51 mm (Ø2 in) bar capacity
  • 600 mm (23.6 in) of Z travel and 500 mm (19.7 in) of tailstock travel
  • 24 / 24 m/min (945 / 945 ipm) rapids on box ways
  • Optional 2-speed belt-type gearbox for more low-speed torque

Limitations

  • One step transmission as standard
  • Top speed of 4,500 rpm, lower than the 6,000 rpm of the SL-20
  • X travel of 180 mm (7.1 in)
  • Live tool turret, C-axis and C+Y axis are extra

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What are the main specifications of the SL-30?

Chuck size 8 in, bar capacity Ø51 mm (Ø2 in), spindle bore Ø65 mm (Ø2.6 in), A2-6 nose, 4,500 rpm, 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp), X travel 180 mm (7.1 in), Z travel 600 mm (23.6 in), 12 tool positions.

02 Is a gearbox available on the SL-30?

The standard spindle transmission is one step. A 2-speed belt-type gearbox is listed as an optional accessory for the SL-20, SL-30, SL-35, SL-40 and SL-40L.

03 What tailstock does the SL-30 have?

A tailstock with a hydraulic quill is standard: Ø60 mm (Ø2.4 in) quill diameter, 60 mm (2.4 in) quill travel, 500 mm (19.7 in) tailstock travel and an MT#4 fixed centre. A programmable hydraulic tailstock and a rotary quill (MT#3) are options.

04 Should I choose the SL-30 or the SL-35?

The SL-35 has the same 8 in chuck, bar capacity and motor but a 45° bed, a shorter Z travel of 400 mm (15.7 in) and Y-axis figures of ±40 mm (±1.6 in) in its table. The SL-30 has 600 mm (23.6 in) of Z and suits longer shaft work.
